International Family Migration and Normative Languages

International Sociological Association, Congress 2018. Panel Research Committee 25, Language and Society

Family reunification, mixed marriages and other forms of international family migration are highly politicized topics depicted as threats for national identity. In some countries, the conditions to access the family rights have been reformed complicating the processes of applications for visa, residence permit and nationality. In other countries, migrant and binational families encounter administrative and religious constraints to formalise their unions, to pass on nationality and rights to the children or simply to be socially accepted. This session explores the language employed to define family migration ‒ and the social-administrative processes that go with ‒ by politicians, media, bureaucrats, civil society actors and by family members too. The session welcomes papers from a broad empirical perspectives that explore the changing (or the persistence) of normative languages related to family migration over time.

Fait guerrier, distance corporelle et « processus de civilisation »

Cette session – simple ou double selon l'affluence et la qualité des abstracts proposés – invite des socio-historiens, sociologues ou historiens qui interrogent les pratiques guerrières en termes proxémiques et de transformation du rapport au corps à présenter l'état de leurs réflexions et recherches théorico-empiriques. Les abstracts peuvent porter sur des cas d'étude issus de l'époque médiévale jusqu'au siècle passé, véritable laboratoire de violences de masse, de même qu'elles peuvent bien sûr avoir trait aux guerres ayant cours aujourd'hui. La session aura lieu dans le cadre du prochain congrès mondial de sociologie qui se déroulera à Toronto du 15 au 21 juillet 2018 et est organisée par le comité de recherche RC56 (Historical Sociology), notamment lié à la fondation Norbert Elias.

Archives unleashed: Web archive hackathon

This hackathon will bring together a small group of 20-30 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to hackathon, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language such as Python strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community.

Nous fêtons aujourd’hui un anniversaire que Dante lui-même, tout en se complaisant de citer la constellation des jumeaux qui lui avait fait don de son « ingegno », n’aurait jamais célébré, car les anniversaires de naissance, à la différence des anniversaires de morts et des saints patrons, sont une pratique culturelle établie au bas Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne seulement.

Participatory Media and Moral Panic

Panel on "Participatory Media and Moral Panic" at the Social Media and Society conference

The transformation of the media landscape invites us to rethink the dialectic between "media" and "moral panic", by focusing on the ways in which participatory media enables the public’s participation in moral panic. The coproduction of moral panic, via media participation, can be analyzed to document how individuals, through their relational links, trigger, maintain and propagate moral panic or how these forms of moral regulation affect sociability, notably those stigmatized by the controversial subject. This may also allow the study of how mediatization of social relations, stemming from participatory media, leads to renegotiating a number of democratic balances. These include the relationship between private and public spheres as well as the role of publics in constituting collective dynamics, such as the formation of public problems.

This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the complex and fluid relationships between hope and trust, and how might betrayal play a productive role in this bond. As concepts, ideas or simple notions, hope and trust seem to have simultaneously lost contemporary currency while being ever more necessary in our every day lives. We seem resigned to a kind of hopelessness, seem unwilling to trust others and are ready and willing to betray whomever we might need to in order to advance our own careers or personal agendas. Yet new technologies require us to place personal information online, to communicate with strangers, and to hold onto the promise of happiness. How are our maintenance of hope, our need to trust and our willingness to betray intertwined? How are these concepts evolving?

Tendances émergentes en histoire du livre et de l'imprimé

Ces journées viseront à identifier les tendances émergentes dans la recherche en histoire du livre et de l’imprimé ainsi qu’à proposer une plateforme et un lieu d’échanges pour les jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs des universités canadiennes. L’événement se déroulera en deux temps : la première partie aura lieu principalement en français à l’Université de Sherbrooke et la seconde principalement en anglais, à l’Université de Toronto. Ce sera l’occasion pour les étudiant-e-s de s’interroger sur ce que signifie étudier l’histoire du livre, d’identifier des tendances émergentes dans les études en histoire du livre au Canada et de présenter les résultats de leurs recherches. Par ailleurs, dans la perspective d’une collaboration bilingue et interdisciplinaire, un atelier en anglais se tiendra à Sherbrooke et un atelier en français se tiendra à Toronto.

Whereas much attention has been paid to the Burgundian Low Countries of the fifteenth century and the so-called Golden Age of the seventeenth, the culture of the Netherlands in the century in between has long been neglected. Yet the past two decades have witnessed significant research on Netherlandish art, literature, and society of the sixteenth century. The period was famously marked by the twin flashpoints of iconoclasm and revolt, but it witnessed throughout a significant development in artistic, political, and literary culture. This interdisciplinary conference invites papers on topics related to the Netherlandish Culture of the Sixteenth Century.

Colloque de la French Colonial Historical Society

Le 37ème congrès de la Société d’histoire coloniale française se tiendra à Toronto du 2 au 4 juin 2011. Il aura lieu sur le campus central de l’Université de Toronto. Le thème principal portera sur « Liens et continuités entre les premier et second empires coloniaux français », mais comme toujours, des propositions de communication sur d’autres aspects de l’histoire coloniale française peuvent aussi nous être adressées. La Société encourage des chercheurs de toute discipline à soumettre des propositions. Les interventions ne doivent pas être déjà publiées, ni présentées ou programmées à un autre colloque. Chaque intervenant disposera de 20 minutes de présentation.

Bohème sans frontière / Bohemia Without Borders

Grâce aux Scènes de la vie de bohème de Murger, à l’opéra de Puccini ou encore à la chanson de Charles Aznavour, nous avons tous une idée, plus ou moins confuse, de ce qu’a été la bohème littéraire et artistique dans les deux derniers siècles. Ce mot appelle toujours, chez le lecteur contemporain, une multitude d’images, de scènes et de personnages types. Marx, Benjamin, Bourdieu et bien d’autres ont eu recours à sa force d’évocation. Et pourtant rares ont été les tentatives pour envisager la bohème dans ses diverses dimensions. Le colloque international « Bohème sans frontière / Bohemia Without Borders » explorera cette question cruciale de l’histoire de la littérature et de la culture tant française qu’espagnole, britannique, canadienne et sud-américaine. Il s’agira d’interroger les modes de constitution, de perpétuation, de représentation, de légitimation de la bohème, ainsi que la diffusion de son imaginaire au-delà des frontières géographiques et culturelles de la France.

Les chercheurs sont invités à adresser leurs propositions (un titre et un texte programmatique d’une dizaine de lignes, en français ou en anglais) avant le 1er septembre 2007 à Anthony Glinoer (anthony.glinoer@utoronto.ca) et à Pascal Brissette (pascal.brissette@mcgill.ca). Les communications seront prononcées en français ou en anglais et ne devront pas dépasser 25 minutes.
