Intersections. New perspectives for public humanities

HFC-INT 2020

The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

Venezia Novecento: le voci di Paola Masino e Milena Milani

Il convegno ha lo scopo d’indagare il rapporto di Paola Masino e Milena Milani con Venezia, portando in primo piano una comune esperienza d’esilio imposto dal fascismo e mettendo in luce inediti legami all’interno di una comunità artistica che le vide partecipi tra primo e secondo Novecento. Paola Masino (1908-1989) visse un periodo d'esilio nella città lagunare, a fianco del compagno Massimo Bontempelli. Qui trovarono inizio le sue riflessioni sulla relazione donna-società, venne concepito il romanzo Nascita e morte della massaia e l'autrice ebbe l'opportunità di incontrare vari intellettuali, tra cui Anna Maria Ortese. Anche per Milena Milani (1917-2013) Venezia fu un luogo di scambio con figure del panorama dell’arte, uno spazio di costruzione della propria poetica nonché sede privilegiata del mestiere di giornalista e traduttrice per il Cavallino di Carlo Cardazzo. In città pubblicò le prime raccolte di poesia e racconti, tra cui Ignoti furono i cieli (1944), ambientò La ragazza di nome Giulio (1964) e fu operatrice culturale.

Waging war and making peace

European ways of inciting and containing armed conflict, 1648-2020

The history of Europe is as much about violence and divisions – including religious wars, national clashes and ideological conflicts – as it is about shared cultural, social and economic accomplishments. If war has been such a constant presence in the history unfolding on the continent, the incessant efforts to limit its destructiveness are also an undeniable fact. It was such efforts that eventually led to the birth of Jus ad bellum and, ultimately, laid down the foundations of modern international law. From such a viewpoint, one might even find another definition of what European history might be. Some scholars have suggested that if war has structured a common European space, the containment of violence and the art of peacemaking have constituted ‘Europe’ in thought and practice.

Séminaire d’histoire de l’art vénitien 2019

Voir Venise et son profil si singulier, fixer le cadre et la mettre dans une boîte : ce topos des voyageurs et des amateurs de la Sérénissime explique à la fois sa fortune historique et son infortune touristique. C’est pourtant dans ce territoire qui englobe la cité lagunaire et sa terra ferma que s’est aussi élaborée la notion même de veduta et de paysage. Une vue construite par le regard, en premier lieu, en tant que genre pictural, progressivement autonome de Bellini et Cima à Giorgione et Titien, dans un registre humaniste et littéraire ; mais aussi comme nouvel enjeu architectural et spatial. D’autres esprits plus scientifiques tâcheront d’élaborer, de recréer astucieusement ce que la vue offre à Venise depuis ses postes d’observation singuliers qu’offrent canaux, balcons, campaniles, jusqu’à ces fameuses altane. Patrie du premier travelling, Venise et son territoire restent un terrain d’expérimentation innovant, du Mondo nuovo aux dernières expériences de visualisation spatio-temporelles par le numérique proposées par le Venise Time Machine Project. C’est à cette « fabrique de la vision », pour reprendre la belle expression de Carlo Montanaro, que convie ce séminaire vénitien.

L'expertise en architecture

France et Italie (XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles)

L’appel à communication a pour objectif de réunir des études portant sur des édifices parlants, c’est-à-dire documentés par des textes et des images évoquant directement ou indirectement les discussions dont ils ont fait l’objet lors de leur construction, leur entretien ou même leur démolition. Le contexte administratif de ces discussions et le profil des acteurs qui y participent sera restitué afin de comprendre sur quoi se fonde l’expertise de ceux qui, architectes ou non, parlent d’architecture. Une présentation générale du thème de l’expertise en architecture, centrée sur Paris et sur Venise, sera assurée par les organisateurs du colloque. Nous recherchons des études de cas localisées dans les principales provinces du royaume de France et les différents états italiens au cours des XVII^e et XVIII^e siècles.

A global history of free ports

Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)

Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVI^th to the early XX^th century.

Nella prosecuzione ideale di due convegni tenuti a Roma La Sapienza nel 2013 e 2014, questo terzo appuntamento, che si sposta a Venezia, affronta per la prima volta il periodo post-bando. Tra 1302 e 1321 il grosso dei "documenti" è costituito dalle epistole. Il Convegno "Dante attraverso i documenti III" si propone di far convergere una serie di studiosi con l'obiettivo di un commento storico delle lettere. Un nuovo, e ultimo, appuntamento è previsto nel Giugno 2016.

The aim is not only to remember his work, but also to deepen and to elaborate, case by case, his hypothesis, themes and questions by constructing new occasions for debate and intellectual expansion.

Lingue, saperi e conflitti nell’Italia medievale

Il seminario si inserisce nel progetto di ricerca BIFLOW - Bilingualism in Florentine and Tuscan Works (ca. 1260 - ca. 1416) [H2020 Erc Starting Grant n. 637533] diretto da Antonio Montefusco e intende indagare la cultura italiana del Basso Medioevo. Risulta caratteristica di questa stagione una peculiare articolazione fra luoghi del sapere (università, studia mendicanti, gruppi informali), protagonisti della disseminazione culturale (spesso personalità non immediatamente inquadrabili nelle istituzioni della formazione), forme e generi letterari di tale disseminazione, nonché loro forma linguistica (spiccatamente bilingue). Nel seminario, si indagheranno una serie significativa di case studies che rientrano in questo quadro, dando particolare rilevanza a tradizioni che si sono sviluppate attraverso lingue differenti, dando particolare risalto a fenomeni di traduzione/volgarizzamento, perché particolarmente significativi della forma mentis intellettuale del periodo.

Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries

What are “Venetian” commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts. This conference focuses on the question of how Venice designed and exported its own identity through all kinds of its goods.

Les écrits d’Esther (Etty) Hillesum sont pour nous un recueil precieux, constituant une documentation historique très saillante. Ils représentent un reportage au sujet du mal extrême, tel que la persécution raciale et les lagers, ainsi qu’une puissante réflexion philosophique autour de la valeur et du sens de la vie, de l'amour et de la mort. Le Colloque international « Etty hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014) » (9 et 10 décembre 2014, Université Ca' Foscari de Venise, Italie) veut tracer un bilan de l'œuvre de cet important témoin du XX^e siècle.

Les cuivres émaillés dits « vénitiens » de la Renaissance italienne

Géographie artistique, collectionnisme, technologie

Les cuivres émaillés et dorés représentent, au sein des arts décoratifs de la Renaissance italienne, une production relativement limitée (moins de trois cent objets sont parvenus jusqu’à nous) et très raffinée, traditionnellement attribuée à Venise. Admirés et collectionnés au XIX^e siècle – période à laquelle se forment les principales collections européennes –, ces objets dont la production remonte à la fin du XV^e siècle tombent ensuite dans l’oubli. Ce colloque interdisciplinaire se donne pour objectif de mieux connaître ces œuvres de haute qualité artistique, tant du point de vue de leur technique de fabrication, de leur forme et ornementation, que de leur contexte de création culturel et social. Il s’attachera à définir un corpus des formes et des décors, à évoquer la clientèle et les commanditaires de ces œuvres, grâce notamment à l’étude de l’héraldique et de l’emblématique, à évoquer leur arrivée sur le marché de l’art européen au XIXe siècle, puis américain au XX^e siècle.

Urbanismes expérimentaux et alternatifs dans la région MENA : construire une recherche critique et « politique » sur les modes renouvelés de faire la ville

Conférence annuelle de l'Italian Association for Middle Eastern Studies (SeSaMO) - Panel 12

Ce panel est centré sur les formes renouvelées de faire la ville dans la région MENA (urbanisme environnemental, éco-quartiers, urbanisme résilient, « responsive urbanism », initiatives participatives, urbanisme durable…). Il abordera deux types d’espaces, les quartiers précaires ou informels, où des formes renouvelées et expérimentales sont à l’œuvre, et les grands éco-projets ayant adopté depuis quelques années des démarches écologiques à côté de stratégies globales. L’hypothèse est que la région MENA est travaillée au moins depuis les années 2000 par de nouvelles formes d’urbanisme porteuses de signaux faibles de changements et d’innovations à la fois dans la gouvernance de l’action urbaine, mais aussi au niveau de la professionnalisation et de l’apprentissage de nouveaux modes de faire, penser et intervenir sur la ville, dont les dimensions environnementales et de durabilité sont des moteurs. Le panel visera à comprendre les raisons pour lesquelles, toutefois, cette région du monde peine à « actualiser » son logiciel sur les théories et pratiques de l’urbanisme.

Il tema della malinconia, nelle sue diverse declinazioni storico-artistiche, mediche, letterarie, filosofiche, psicologiche costituisce l’oggetto di una vasta letteratura. Del resto, lo stesso termine “malinconia” è un termine polisemico, associato storicamente a una grande varietà di gruppi di significati non sempre assimilabili tra loro. Il seminario intende approfondire le diverse valenze semantiche del termine “malinconia” in ambito religioso in età moderna, sia in campo protestante sia in campo cattolico.

The seminar aims at exploring the different meanings of the term "melancholy" in early modern religion, both Protestant and Catholic. One of its main purposes will be to enquire into, clarify, and emphasize both elements of continuity and what was specific to each of the diverse discourses on melancholy within the historical, socio-cultural, political, geographical and linguistic contexts that framed its production.
