Which capacities for participatory approaches?
The point of departure of this CAPA.CITY autumnschool is that we need a new movement Reclaim the Suburbs that supports residents to organize themselves and initiate own retrofitting projects; projects that do reduce the societal costs of their mode of living, but also fit within their housing dream: garage-box entrepreneurs, multigenerational villa-collectives, eco-garden networks, crowdfunded community services or renewable energy cooperatives. The CAPA.CITY autumnschool will collect and discuss ongoing Reclaim the Suburb initiatives, with a focus on the capacities that collectives need to develop, in order to initiate, run and sustain such initiatives.

Subaltern political knowledges, ca. 1770- c. 1950
During the last decades, political historians have increasingly focused on the evolution of political consciousness among the “common people” during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In that process they have often made use of all-encompassing notions such as politicization, democratization and nationalization. The conference “Subaltern political knowledges” intends to take one step back and ask a question which should precede all discussion of politicization, democratization and nationalization of the masses: what did people actually know about politics?

Food at the heart of nineteenth-century art
This symposium intends to study the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and nineteenth-century art. For this conference, we welcome papers that discuss how the development of the food industry and the changing notion of “taste” and social mores are reflected in nineteenth-century art in the broadest sense. Papers may concern visual arts including graphic arts in the form of illustrated advertisements and culinary literature, as well as nouveautés (objects which were designed to reflect the evolution of eating and table manners).

Focusing on the software’s possible advantages and pitfalls, this workshop will show the participants how to prepare their documents in order to achieve the best OCR (optical character recognition) results. The second workshop will introduce Transkribus, a software package that has recently made great advancements in optically recognising characters in handwritten materials.

Microfinance and New Left in Latin America
The conference brings a number of stakeholders from the microfinance sector, social and political movements, New Left governments as well as academics together in order to discuss and clarify these issues. We expect to contribute to a common frame of analysis and to identify avenues for a more fruitful articulation of microfinance strategies with the emancipatory agendas of Latin American governments and social movements. The conference is a joint organisation of the Latin American and Caribbean Forum for Rural Finance (FOROLACFR), the French Microfinance Network CERISE (Comité d’Échange, de Réflexion et d’information sur les Systèmes Épargne- Crédit), the Center for European Research in Microfinance (CERMI, Mons University) and the Institute of Development Policy and Management (IOB, University of Antwerp) -
