The Society
The society was founded in 1976 to encourage the study of the history of society by teaching, research, publication and other appropriate means. Since then it has organised a conference annually and acted to represent the interests of social history and of social historians both within higher education and in the wider community. The society is based in the UK but is concerned with social history internationally and welcomes contributions and members from overseas.

Activities of the Society
The Society's Bulletin appears twice yearly, in the spring and autumn. It contains information about the Society's activities, including the annual conference and conference abstracts. It also provides news and information on developments in the discipline, including reports from HUDG, and from the ESRC and its liaison group with the Social History Society and the Economic History Society. Book reviews and review essays are also a feature.

The Conference is held annually, in early January, at different locations around the UK and focusing around a different theme. In 1997, the Conference was held in Lancaster with the theme of 'Time'; in 1998 in Nottingham on the theme of 'Family and Household', in 1999 in York on the theme of 'Self and Society'. In 2000, the millenial conference will be at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, on the theme of 'Envisioning Futures'.
