The Society for the Study of French History 16th Annual Meeting CALL FOR PAPERS 4th- 6th April 2002 Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/t.d.watson/conference.htm

CALL FOR PAPERS.

The annual meeting of the Society for the Study of French History for the year 2002 will be hosted by the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom, and will take place from Thursday 4th April through Saturday 6th April. Situated on the scenic north-east coast, Newcastle is reputed to have some of the best weather in England. The conference will be held on the main campus, only a fifteen-minute walk from the Georgian city centre.

Invited speakers include Herman Lebovics, Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch, Marc Ferro, Euan Cameron and Gérard Noiriel, all of whom will be addressing the topic, "Beyond the Hexagon: France, Europe and the Wider World." The conference organisers intend a wide interpretation of this theme, including such topics as the international character of the early monarchy, the incorporation of borderland provinces and the international influence of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic regimes. In addition, we plan to offer a rich series of panels in the fields of exploration, colonisation and de-colonisation. By bringing our varied and interdisciplinary approaches to this topic, we hope to explore the various relationships between France and the Other, whether that "Other" be found on distant island shores or in the "wilds" of Brittany.

As always, papers of 25-30 minutes are invited from all quarters - preferably (but not necessarily) associated with the theme of "Beyond the Hexagon" - on French history subjects. Proposals should consist of the paper title and a synopsis of no more than a page, as well as complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation and department, mailing address, fax and phone numbers, and email address). Proposals should be sent to the following address by 15 OCTOBER 2001:

French History Conference, Newcastle 2002 Dr Tim Watson Department of History University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne U.K. NE1 7RU

They may also be e-mailed to Dr Watson at T.D.Watson@newcastle.ac.uk.

For further information on conference rates and programme, please consult our webpage, at http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/t.d.watson/conference.htm. There will be preferential rates for postgraduate students attending the conference. The Society for French History has a limited number of research bursaries and funds to support research in relevant subject areas.
