MCINTIRE DEPARTMENT OF ART, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2002
The Art History Graduate Association (AHGA) at the University of Virginia is seeking papers which explore the relationships between art and its audience. Possiblethemes include, but are not limited to: devotional art;patronage; portraiture; the connoisseur, critic or collector; the viewer's perspective; art institutions; the gendered viewer; the viewer's experience and space; and more recent theoretical concepts such as the viewer's role in the production of meaning and the equation of the author's death with the viewer's birth. For example, both Renaissance marriage paintings and Minimalism have elicited copious discussion regarding art and its viewers.
