The Victorians Institute Conference will be held October 4-5, 2002 at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

Featured Speaker: John R. Reed, Distinguished Professor of English, Wayne State University.

The topic for this year is The Military in Victorian England. We invite papers on art, history, and literature pertaining to the military in Victorian England.



Possible topics:

- military engagements
- domestic peacekeeping
- expansion of the empire
- recruitment, training, discipline, and compensation of military personnel
- efforts to reform the military
- roles of women and children in the military
- military leaders and images of the hero
- links between military campaigns and advances in technology, transportation,
and communication
- militaristic organizations
- metaphorical wars
