The International Conference organized by ASMCF and CRECIB to be held at Paris 13 University from 4 to 6 September 2003 on the theme "France and Britain : cross influences, mutual representations, comparisons" will include a workshop on "the intellectuals in France and Britain". We suggest to limit the period treated to the 20th century until now. We will restrict the meaning of the word "intellectuals" to the witnesses of their time who take part in the public debates on the main contemporary issues. We could
particularly focus our attention on the relationships of the intellectuals with :
- the State
- institutions (universities, various official organizations)
- political parties and trade unions
- the community
- the media, etc.
Specialists of gender studies could also be concerned with the role and position of women intellectuals in the various fields above mentioned.
Anti-intellectualism such as found in a certain type of newspapers could also be addressed in this workshop. Though each paper need not establish comparisons between the two countries, it would be stimulating for researchers from both countries to conclude the conference by drawing a comprehensive picture of similarities and differences between British and French intellectuals.
Please send the title of your proposed article with an abstract (50 to 150 words) to Michel Prum, Professor (University of Paris 7) before the end of February 2003
