Textual criticism and Genetics - Confronting methods

Interdisciplinary Workshop

1 - 3 September 2004

Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium)

http://www.gena.ucl.ac.be/leuven2004/

Although the application of phylogenetic methods (using softwares such as PAUP or PHYLIP) to philological problems already led to notable results (see bibliography : http://www.gena.ucl.ac.be/leuven2004/), this transfer of methods from one field of knowledge to another remains controversial. This workshop intends to meet the expectations of those researchers who are interested in this interdisciplinary approach and to answer the questions raised by sceptical scientists and scholars, such as : are these new tools applicable to all textual traditions? are they only an efficient way of dealing with part of the process of critical edition or more than that? are they providing new insights about the data and the philological work in general? how can we compare the output of those methods, viz. evolutive trees initially designed for biologists, with a classical stemma codicum?

To reach these goals, the workshop will be organised along two lines :

- sharing expertise between active researchers in Critical Editing and Genetics by providing a common tribune;

- experimenting on real datasets in order to explicitly and quantitatively assess the efficiency of the available tools from both the field of genetics and the field of stemmatology.

If you wish to actively take part in this interdisciplinary meeting, those are the three options that are offered :

- to participate to the Stemma Analysis Workshop itself;

A set of real or computer-simulated data will be distributed to investigators by the end of May. Results of analysis will be discussed during the meeting and compared with the actual pedigree of the manuscripts.

- to present a short paper or a poster (about a work in progress, new project, new edition...);

- to make a demonstration of a software or a method.

Registration

There is no registration fee, but participants might be asked to pay for their conference dinner and transportation to Louvain-la-Neuve.
