« Provincials and Empire »

The graduate students of the Classics, History and History of Art Departments of Yale University invite papers for their upcoming graduate student colloquium, « Provincials and Empire », to be held in New Haven, Connecticut, on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, 2008. Graduate Students are invited to submit abstracts for papers that consider aspects of provincial attitudes and responses to Roman power, from the Late Republic through Late Antiquity. We encourage diverse disciplinary perspectives, including archaeology, art history, epigraphy, history, literature, numismatics, papyrology and religious studies.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

• Provincials' attitudes towards emperors and imperial ideology.
• Provincials' appropriation and re-interpretation of Roman culture.
• Religious responses to Roman power.
• Local art and imperial themes.
• Provincials' relations with imperial governors and soldiers.
• Provincial loyalty in times of civil wars or invasions.
• Rebels, revolts, traitors.

Clifford Ando (University of Chicago) will deliver the keynote address.

Anonymous abstracts, of no more than one page in length, should be received by Friday, January 18, 2008.
Please indicate your name, institution, degree, specialization, abstract title and any audio-visual equipment you may require on a separate document.
Presentations should be no more than 20 minutes in length.
