À l’occasion du quarantième anniversaire du coup d’État militaire du 11 septembre 1973 contre le gouvernement de Salvador Allende au Chili, l’association de doctorants en études cinématographiques Les Trois lumières organise deux journées d’étude. Prévues pour les 9 et 10 octobre 2013 à l’INHA, elles seront consacrées à la représentation cinématographique de la politique du gouvernement d’Unité populaire et de la répression, de 1973 jusqu’à la transition démocratique, ainsi qu’aux manifestations de solidarité internationale des milieux cinématographiques avant et après le putsch.

Argument
For the 40th anniversary of the September 11th 1973 military coup against Salvador Allende’s government in Chile, the Doctoral candidates of Les Trois lumières (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne ; HiCSA EA 4100) have organized a conference. This conference is dedicated to Chilean political cinema during the Popular Unity period and during the dictatorship following the putsch. It will also focus on international solidarity of cinematic community before and after the coup. We will use the Chilean case to study the connections between cinema, politics and memory, at the American, European, and USSR levels.
We will pay attention to the political commitment of Chilean filmmakers before and after the election of Salvador Allende and cinematic project carried by the Popular Unity government. The cinematographic activities against dictatorship of exiled filmmakers will be observed as carrying on or cutting off former experiences. We will also examine their later works as for example the attempt to set cinematographic experiences in other contexts.
We will then analyze the part played by international cinema organizations (America, Europe, USSR) in supporting the Popular Unity government as well as in informing and mobilizing against crackdowns after the coup. We will pay a particular attention to the people involved in the movements (as individuals, collective, institutions, movie festivals…) and on ideas carried by their own political and historical backgrounds.
Last, we will deal with the role of cinema in carrying the memory of Allende’s presidency and Pinochet’s dictatorship in present-day Chile. We will focus on the status given to movies directed in Chile or abroad during the seventies. Video and local TV broadcasts and their attempts to resist the dictatorship from the early seventies to the late eighties will also be examined.
This last part will focus on reviewing the current state of research and paths yet unexplored on the subject.
