The Bronislaw Geremek Institute of European Cultural History – Summer workshops
Ateliers d'été – Institut d'histoire culturelle européenne Bronislaw Geremek
Published on mercredi, mars 20, 2013
Summary
These workshops propose to consider the political uses of folklores and the presence of folklore-related elements in new aesthetic phenomena. The IHCE’s summer workshops on “Folklore and Politics” aim to highlight and develop cultural history approaches while being open to other disciplines. Monographic approaches may be accepted, but the workshops definitely aim to explore historiographical stakes, with a view to showing the fertility of cultural history, which never analyses the contradiction of identity as a self-contained phenomenon.

Argument
The cultural history of folklores has been influenced by "the invention of tradition" defined in Eric J. Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger’s pioneering eponymous work. Totalitarian regimes, backward-looking movements and all forms of populism largely make use of folklores, which are, however, publically appropriated in sometimes contradictory ways, and generate "spontaneous" reactions from civilian societies faced with different forms of power.
These workshops propose to consider the political uses of folklores and the presence of folklore-related elements in new aesthetic phenomena: the Romanian ethnic TV channels, folk festivals, the importance of "Celtic" or Nordic elements in the success of heroic fantasy, the transformation of regional or sub-regional gastronomic specialties into heritage, the traditional instrumental touch in some popular songs, the growing presence of ethnic elements in fashion styles, sometimes likely to act as signs of political recognition.
The birth of these new folkloric phenomena allows for the exploration of new themes and approaches. The IHCE’s summer workshops on "Folklore and Politics" aim to highlight and develop cultural history approaches while being open to other disciplines. Monographic approaches may be accepted, but the workshops definitely aim to explore historiographical stakes, with a view to showing the fertility of cultural history, which never analyses the contradiction of identity as a self-contained phenomenon.
The round tables, moderated by famous names in the field of cultural history, will be open to advanced students, young researchers, as well as to anyone interested in these questions.
