The members of LabEx “Writing a new history of Europe” plan a long-term research project on a gendered history of Europe. The first step of our project will be to bring together researchers who pioneered the study of a gendered European history. This international workshop will take place at the German Historical Institute in Paris (27-28 June 2013). It will provide an opportunity for reflection on the existing literature on the notion of a gendered European history in general.  Our reflection will be based on several key questions: How does gender affect the way we conceive of and construct Europe? What does “being European” mean, and how do women and men live in Europe depending on their sexual and gendered identity? Are there several Europe(s) if we consider the history of the continent through a gendered lens? An interdisciplinary approach to gender studies, combining history and other social sciences, will allow us to tackle these questions.
