Resumen
Interoperable Annotations for the Arts and Humanities is an event in the series of DARIAH-Expert workshops. It is a combined effort of the Berlin-Brandenburgische-Akademie der Wissenschaften as partner within DARIAH-DE and The Language Archive. The series of DARIAH-Expert workshops has the goal to bring together a small group of experts, related to a specific topic and have them exchange their knowledge about latest developments.

The DARIAH/TLA Expert workshop “Interoperable Annotations for the Arts and
Humanities” is an event in the series of DARIAHExpert workshops. It is a combined effort of
the BBAW as partner within DARIAHDE and the The Language Archive. The series of
DARIAH Expert workshops has the goal to bring together a small group of around 812 experts, related to a specific topic and have them exchange their knowledge about latest developments.The participants primarily targeted are confirmed researchers with a solid record in humanities and/or digital humanities research as well as experience with using, enhancing and developing methods, tools and/or datasets. The focus lies on the critical analysis/evaluation and further development of digital practices and software relevant to a specific area in the (Digital) Humanities, with the aim of making some concrete progress.
The workshop is scheduled between the 17. 18. 06. 2013 and will take place at the “BerlinBrandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities” in Berlin. It will combine a limited amount of informal project presentations in the morning with large room for discussion and concrete work in small groups on specific tasks in the afternoon and the day after. The goal of the morning round is to identify certain topics and issues to be worked on in the groups and to
build up the groups around those. At the end of the workshop the groups will come together
again to share their results and demonstrate developments.
Hence the main approach of the workshop is to work on shared issues which relate to the participants. The agenda will not be filled up any further before the workshop, but within the morning slot of the first day. Nevertheless the workshop has two perspectives which will frame the selection of topics for the groups. One perspective is to work on strategies, approaches and tools which bring annotations out of a proprietary, software dependent or desktop oriented environment into the web as an interoperable resource. The other perspective is to work on tasks related to the identification of typical annotation practices and the methodological use of annotations in the (Digital) Humanities. Both perspectives are related to two fundamental developments in recent years. One is the work of the W3C Open Annotation Community Group; the other is the establishment of HTML5 and Semantic Web techniques. These developments increase the possibilities to share, render and apply annotations within the Digital Humanities dramatically. They offer new perspectives to deal with traditional digital annotation problems, like, for example, fragment referencing or multimedia annotation. It is a new ground to leverage the potential of annotations in a distributed webenvironment for the arts and humanities.
Axes
The following list was not made to be mandatory in any way but should give an
exemplifying orientation about what could be an outcome of the workshop:
- Deep understanding of suitable tools and approaches ready to be used to make annotations
- more interoperable or to work with annotations in an interoperable way
- The adaption of existing annotation software to make it more interoperable within a web
- environment
- A set of approaches, fostering interoperability of annotations leading into a document of best
- practices
- A definition of strategies for the leverage of annotations from closed software or from
- proprietary standards
- An articulated vision of the importance and roles annotations can play for (Digital) Humanities
- research in a digital environment to promote the topic of annotation.
- A description of the landscape of (digital) annotation practices and methods in the humanities
- A description of further needs for interoperable annotations from a humanities perspective
- which could be used by other initiatives and projects
- An agreement how to continue with the built up network of annotation tools implementers for
- further synergistic development.
