Study of international media events based on digital data
Étude des évènements médiatiques internationaux à partir des traces numériques
Published on lundi, juin 30, 2014
Summary
In the context of the project ANR Geomedia, the Post-doc in Media Studies has two main tasks: Define the theoretical framework for the project on the media event and in general on all aspects related to communication and media studies.; Develop a general reflection on the use of digital traces for studying international events and on the methods (including digital methods) more suitable to this type of analysis.

Context
ANR GEOMEDIA project (http://geomedia.hypotheses.org/). Although they rarely worked together, specialists in geography and media studies develop similar questions about the contemporary dynamics of globalization and of the international system. Maintaining the initial assumption that globalization must first be studied through flow dynamics rather than structures, the main goal of this project is to carry out a joint research (geographical and media) on the contemporary exchanges of media information flows between world countries. To do this, we propose to develop a database storing the RSS feeds associated with articles published by a hundred newspapers in different parts of the world and to extract two types of information: on flows and on international events.
Newspapers are selected as markers of public spaces of countries where their readers are located. Among the articles of these newspapers, we focus on international news, that is to say the information relating to events occurring outside the country's borders. In this perspective, any article of a country A’ newspaper dealing with country B is considered an information flow between countries A and B. By aggregating these data, we can derive temporal, spatial and thematic distribution of information flows. The analysis of these flows using the methods usually used to study the exchange of persons or properties will validate or invalidate the hypothesis of global village and especially will clarify the forms of regionalization of media information circulating among contries.
This geographical perspective is complementary to a media approach exploiting the database with a different research perspective. Focusing on events (disaster, war, crisis, protest...) rather than on places, we will try to measure the international impact or, more precisely, the spatio-temporal distribution considering each newspaper as a sensor. Through this approach, we aim at distinguishing global and local international events. From a historical perspective, we may also highlight phenomena of spatio-temporal diffusion of news and temporal connections with past events.
Mission
In the context of this project, the Post-doc in Media Studies has two main tasks:
1) Define the theoretical framework for the project on the media event and in general on all aspects related to communication and media studies. Working in collaboration with the project team (including a post-doc in geography), she/he will contribute to the development of empirical cases and of the theoretical model for the study of international media events.
2) Develop a general reflection on the use of digital traces for studying international events and on the methods (including digital methods) more suitable to this type of analysis. Moreover, the Post-doc will be asked to compare the analysis of media events performed on RSS feeds with other analysis carried out with other types of digital traces (Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare data ...).
