XXXVth Meeting of the Portuguese Economic and Social History Association

Zusammenfassung

The recent global economic crisis has drawn attention to inequality as a trigger for social tensions. The scientific discussion has been attentive to such problem. History has also a significant role in explaining causes, models, trends and effects of an unequal economic and social development which has shaped the world, countries and regions throughout the time.

Introduction

The XXXVth Meeting of the Portuguese Economic and Social History Association will take place at Évora University, the 13th and 14th November 2015. Its main discussion topic will be Inequality(ies).

The recent global economic crisis has drawn attention to inequality as a trigger for social tensions. The scientific discussion has been attentive to such problem. History has also a significant role in explaining causes, models, trends and effects of an unequal economic and social development which has shaped the world, countries and regions throughout the time.

Themes

The annual meeting of APHES 2015 encourages historians to take part on such debate, proposing for discussion the following topics, among others:

  • motives for inequality(ies)
  • models and mechanisms of wealth and social privileges distribution
  • dimensions and indicators of inequality(ies) (property, income, health, education, consumption, gender, minorities, etc…)
  • devices of production and legitimation of inequality(ies)
  • strategies for fighting or resisting inequality(ies)
  • protagonists and discourses about inequality(ies)
  • inequality(ies): theories, methodologies and concepts

Submission guidelines

Sessions and Papers Proposals

The Organizing Committee encourages the submission of thematic sessions and round tables proposals in the field of Economic and Social History, although the submission of individual paper proposals is accepted. Preferably, those panels should be international. The proposals should comprise three papers, one discussant and one chair. Each session will last for 90 minutes (20 minutes for each paper and 30 minutes for general discussion).

Languages

The official languages of the Meeting will be Portuguese and English.

Rules

Each proponent can only submit one paper. Paper proposals should include an abstract between 400 and 500 words (including 4 key words, with the description of the theme, goals, theoretical framework and empirical support of the paper, if relevant) and a brief CV (1 page max.).

The deadline for paper submission will be

30 May 2015

and it should be made directly at the Meeting website (soon available).

APHES Prize 2015

All young researchers, both Portuguese, both working at Portuguese Universities, are invited to submit their papers to the APHES Prize. The Prize Regulation is available here. Final papers, with a maximum of 12.000 words (including references), should be delivered until 30 September.
