Alors que la France et les États-Unis sont souvent considérés comme des « républiques sœurs », la particularité de l’expérience historique de ces deux nations engendre des modèles, apparemment opposés, relativement à la liberté, aux droits et devoirs ainsi qu’au traitement des différences (sexuelles, sexuées, religieuses, raciales, etc.). Par ailleurs, la France comme les États-Unis sont toujours aux prises avec leurs passés (l’esclavage, le colonialisme), tout en s’efforçant de s’adapter aux exigences du pluralisme introduites par la mondialisation, le transnationalisme et les mouvements sociaux du 20^e siècle.

 

Argumentaire

Par ailleurs, la France comme les États-Unis sont toujours aux prises avec leurs passés (l’esclavage, le colonialisme), tout en s’efforçant de s’adapter aux exigences du pluralisme introduites par la mondialisation, le transnationalisme et les mouvements sociaux du XX^e siècle. Ce colloque se donne pour tâche d’éclairer comment l’égalité est conçue et mise en pratique en France et aux États-Unis. Il examine ainsi les similitudes et divergences entre les fondements épistémologiques et politiques de leurs visions respectives de l’égalité, liées, d’un côté, au républicanisme français et, de l’autre, au libéralisme américain. Suivant une approche interdisciplinaire, il explore les expressions et conceptions de l’égalité à la lumière des rapports à l’identité et aux identifications, qu’ils soient posés en termes de genre, de racialisation ou de hiérarchies sociales. Il s’agit donc d’interroger comment l’actualisation du couple égalité/identité renforce, paradoxalement, des formes de vulnérabilité et d’exclusion.

Argument

While France and America are often considered “sister republics”, the respective particularity of the historical experiences of these two nations has given rise to seemingly incompatible notions of freedom and liberty, rights and responsibilities, and attitudes towards sexual, racial, and religious difference. In addition, both France and America continue to grapple with the “dark spots” of their pasts (slavery, colonialism) while straining to adapt to the calls for greater pluralism precipitated by decolonization, transnationalism, and major social movements of the 20th century. The purpose of this conference is to interrogate how equality is conceived and practiced in each of these policies. It seeks to illuminate the points of correspondence and discord between the epistemological and political foundations that inform both American liberalism and French republicanism. In advancing an interdisciplinary methodology, the conference aspires to explore how identity, gender, and social hierarchy are coded by these conceptions of the equal and whether and how such conceptions paradoxically re-entrench forms of vulnerability and exclusion.
