Every piece can be studied through its commission. The conditions of pieces commission in late Middle Ages and early modern period started a long series of studies in the domain of the History of Arts. The multidisciplinary approach led by our PhD meetings brings us to enlarge the field of the study focusing on the different types of artistic production, be they painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theatre, dance, literature or philosophy. Contributions will focus on every kind of production, material or immaterial, lasting or not, preserved or not.

Subject

Every piece can be studied through its commission. The conditions of pieces commission in late Middle Ages and early modern period started a long series of studies in the domain of the History of Arts. The multidisciplinary approach led by our PhD meetings brings us to enlarge the field of the study focusing on the different types of artistic production, be they painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theatre, dance, literature or philosophy. Contributions will focus on every kind of production, material or immaterial, lasting or not, preserved or not, and can be developed on the following research lines:

  • Actors : the reflection will focus on the role of the protagonists customers, executors and potential intermediaries.  It is necessary to investigate the nature of the customers: are they individuals or groups? Which are his/her technical skills, his/her scientific knowledge, in the aforementioned domains? In which realm does the commission take place: civil, religious or private? The social status, the education or even a certain reputation of the executor contribute to clarify this research line and are therefore worth studying. At last, are there any intermediaries between these actors? Who are they, and which is their role? Studying the relations between these actors and the networks they are in might as well be taken into consideration.
  • Contracts : Intermediaries working among the protagonists of the commissions are the core topic of this research line. We invite lecturers to investigate the very nature of the employed sources (contracts, accounting, correspondence, mandates, bills, etc). What information can these documents bring about private, religious or civil commissions? What kinds of clauses are contained in a piece contract?  It is worth enquiring into the economic relations entertained by various customers and executors. Alongside these questions about the sources, a reflection can be made on other ways to deliver the commission
  • Ways of production: it is necessary to deepen the creation and implementation processes. Do the products of the commission differ from those destined to be sold through other channels? For the sake of understanding different ways of pieces production, lectures could focus on a more technical aspect about the material ways of production. This research line is addressed to History of Techniques as well as History of Economics, since it allows investigating the material aspects evoked in the contracts (materials, suppliers, financial management).
