1968 fut une année de luttes, d’insurrections, d’offensives et de manifestations contre le capitalisme et l’impérialisme dont la guerre du Viêt Nam fut l’épicentre. La démocratie, l’égalité et l’émancipation y gagnèrent mais ces luttes rencontrèrent aussi une répression brutale et meurtrière. Des récits révisionnistes ont cherché à effacer la violence policière et la mort de combattants, à estomper le rôle des ouvriers, des femmes, des étudiants et des peuples autochtones, et à éliminer l’importance de l’anti-Américanisme comme de l’anti-impérialisme et de l’anticapitalisme, ainsi que les profondes influences qu’eurent ces mouvements sur les guerres de libération en Algérie, en Amérique Latine et au Viêt Nam.

1968 was a year of offensives, uprisings, and demonstrations against capitalism and imperialism, for liberation and emancipation and the war in Vietnam was its epicenter. The events claimed many victories for democracy, equality, and emancipation, but also provoked deep, abiding repression. A counterfeit history has subsequently erased police violence and the deaths of participants, removed workers, women, students, and indigenous peoples from the picture, and eliminated anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, as well as the profound influences of the wars and interventions in Algeria, Latin America, and Vietnam. “Global 68” will retrieve the aspirations, energies, memories, and histories of this worldwide movement and offer hope to a new generation of activists.

Global 68 est une série de conférences organisées par Françoise Vergès, Marcus Rediker, Oscar Guardiola-Rivera et Sylvie Robic, grâce au soutien du Collège d'études mondiales (FMSH), de l'Université de Pittsburgh, du Birkbeck College (Université de Londres) et de l’Université de Paris-Nanterre.

Le cycle de conférences Global 68 analysera les mouvements et les transformations profondes dans les domaines politique et culturel qui ont fait de 1968 une année extraordinaire au niveau mondial. Trois notions seront au centre des discussions : solidarité, histoire globale et histoire d’en bas.Conférences du 2 au 6 mais 2018 à Paris, Nanterre et Londres avec Angela Davis, Tariq Ali, Peter Linebaugh, Kristin Ross, Lewis Gordon, Silvia Federici, Achille Mbembe, Vijay Prashad, Ronald Judy et plus de 30 chercheurs et artistes de renom.

Global ‘68 is a linked set of conferences, organized by Françoise Vergès, Marcus Rediker, Oscar Guardiola-Rivera, and Sylvie Robic, sponsored by the Collège d'études mondiales, the University of Pittsburgh, Birkbeck, University of London, and the University of Nanterre, to be held in Paris May 2-4 and London May 5-6, 2018.

Both events will focus on the movements and major shifts in politico-cultural sensibilities around the world that made 1968 such an extraordinary year. Three notions are central to our approach: solidarity in alliances, global history, and history from below.
