Summary
Small nations of Central and Eastern Europe have provided fertile ground to study the relationship between religion and politics. Too often, however, research on the region suffers from a problematic Orientalism, depicting nationalism in the East as a dangerous ethnic, religious, and anti-modern force. This bilingual thematic session, organized within the framework of the 2019 Congress of the International Society of Sociology of Religions (ISSR - July 9-12 - Barcelona), seeks to understand the relationship between politics and religion “from within” small nations themselves.

Small nations of Central and Eastern Europe have provided fertile ground to study the relationship between religion and politics. Too often, however, research on the region suffers from a problematic Orientalism, depicting nationalism in the East as a dangerous ethnic, religious, and anti-modern force.
This bilingual thematic session, organized within the framework of the 2019 Congress of the International Society of Sociology of Religions (ISSR - July 9-12 - Barcelona), seeks to understand the relationship between politics and religion “from within” small nations themselves. Although the session will focus on small nations of Central and Eastern Europe, the ultimate goal is to draw a comprehensive portrait of the many past and present articulations between religion and politics in modernity. Three main axes will guide the investigation: a) the institutional forms that the relationship between religion and politics has taken in small nations; b) the socio-cultural projects and utopias that emerged in relation to their religion-politics nexus; c) the religio-political differences and similarities that exist among small nations, as well as those between all nations.

The proposal (title and abstract up to 250 words) should be only in one language – English or French – in which you would like to present your paper.
The deadline for submitting paper proposals is 16 December 2018.
