Argument

The New Science magazine ISSN:2539-2662 (Italy—Colombia) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ on « Global perspectives of Latin-American History».

Latin America has not been fully integrated into the studies of Global history. This does not mean that this part of the world has been disconnected from World history or that the sub-continent has had a passive position in the exchanges, transfers and circulations of modern and contemporary times. On the contrary, Latin America has played a role as receiver, creator and articulator of different historical processes that have developed on a planetary scale. The objective of this dossier is to explore these processes and make visible works that transcend the traditional chronologies and traditional spaces of Latin-American history.

One of the topics that we wish to explore with this set of works is the continuity between the modern and contemporary times in order to establish a long-term reading of the connections that Latin Americans have established with the rest of the world. What particular issues could highlight the connections that Latin America has established with other parts of the world? Can we characterize the subcontinent as a cultural carrefour that would explain part of the great globalizing tendencies? Since when is Latin America part of a global periodization of history?

We encourage participants to explore the connections of Latin America to the global and international dimensions in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In doing so, we welcome approaches investigating the role of individual and collective actors who act beyond the borders of national states, creating or using inter- or transcontinental networks (migrations or construction of transnational communities) or deploying and exchanging techniques (i.e. military, juridical, scientific or architectural knowledge).
