Le séminaire ERC MAP "Noms de dieux !" 3 : "Textes, images et contextes d'usages" poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin en privilégiant deux axes de réflexion : les contextes d’énonciation et la mise en image des « attributs onomastiques divins ». Si la programmation des séances se concentre sur les mondes grec et ouest-sémitique (au sens large), elle propose aussi bien des études de cas que des propositions théoriques. Seront ainsi présentés des dossiers abordant notamment les questions liées aux stratégies de traduction, aux noms propres, à la pluralité du divin, aux interactions entre noms et images, dans des contextes d’usage variés : dédicaces, imprécations, serments, hymnes et autres formes d’adresse.

The ERC MAP Seminar « Noms de dieux ! » 3: “Texts, images and contexts of use” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine by privileging two main issues: the contexts of enunciation and the imaging of "divine onomastic attributes". While the session program focuses on the Greek and Western Semitic worlds (in the broad sense), it aims to propose case studies as well as theoretical proposals. Dossiers will be presented dealing in particular with questions related to translation strategies, proper names, the plurality of the divine, interactions between names and images, in various contexts of use: dedications, curses, oaths, hymns and other forms of address.

Argumentaire

Le projet ERC Advanced Grant MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency ; 741182) travaille sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin dans les mondes grec et sémitique de l’ouest, de 1000 av. à 400 ap. n.è., et les envisage comme des témoignages de la manière dont les puissances divines sont construites, agencées et mobilisées, en particulier dans le cadre rituel. L’analyse porte à la fois sur les aspects structurels des systèmes religieux et sur leur appropriation contextuelle par des agents sociaux. Considérées comme les éléments d’un langage complexe, les séquences onomastiques se rapportant aux dieux donnent ainsi accès à une cartographie du divin, à ses modes de représentation et aux stratégies de communication entre hommes et dieux.

A la suite des sessions 1 et 2 (janvier-juin et octobre-décembre 2018), le séminaire 3 prolonge l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin en privilégiant deux axes de réflexion : les contextes d’énonciation et la mise en image des « attributs onomastiques divins ». Si la programmation des séances recentre le champ d’étude sur les mondes grec et ouest-sémitique (au sens large), elle vise à conserver l’équilibre entre études de cas et propositions théoriques. Seront ainsi présentés des dossiers abordant notamment les questions liées aux stratégies de traduction, aux noms propres, à la pluralité du divin, aux interactions entre noms et images, dans des contextes d’usage variés : dédicaces, imprécations, serments, hymnes et autres formes d’adresse.

Presentation

The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182) works on the systems of naming of the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds (ca. 1000 BCE – ca. 400 CE). Those systems of denomination are considered as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and mobilized, especially in ritual contexts. The analysis covers both the structural aspects of religious systems and their contextual appropriation by social agents. As elements of a complex language, onomastic sequences relating to the gods thus give access to a mapping of the divine, to its modes of representation and to the strategies of communication between men and gods.

Following sessions 1 and 2 (January-June and October-December 2018), Seminar 3 extends the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine by privileging two main issues: the contexts of enunciation and the imaging of "divine onomastic attributes".
