The Fondazione 1563 per l'Arte e la Cultura della Compagnia di San Paolo invites scholars who are younger than 40, active in the disciplines of history, art history, architecture and literature and who hold a Ph.D., a certificate of specialization, a 2nd level master’s, or are enrolled in the second year of such study courses to apply to participate in the Summer School Rethinking the Baroque (XVII and XVIII centuries). Admission requirements

The Fondazione 1563 (“Foundation”), invites scholars who are younger than 40, active in the disciplines of history, art history, architecture and literature and who hold a Ph.D., a certificate of specialization, a 2nd level master’s, or are enrolled in the second year of such study courses (“Candidates”) to apply to participate in the Summer School Rethinking the Baroque (XVII and XVIII centuries). New historical and critical perspectives.

The Summer School will take place from September 2 to September 7, 2019 at the historical residency “Vigna di Madama Reale”, Strada Comunale San Vito Revigliasco 65, 10133 (Torino), or in a different ven- ue in Torino that will be established by the Foundation.

The candidates need to have a knowledge of Italian and english corresponding to or higher than level B2.

The courses of the Summer School will all be taught in Italian.

The Summer School will address periods and turning points of cultural production in the field of art, architecture, literature, music, theatre, history in europe in the XVII and XVIII centuries and it will further develop the critical reflection on the studies dedicated to the Baroque and its chronology.

The Summer School will be structured as follows:

• Lectures by experts in different disciplines. Among them there will be Professor Franco Benigno, Professor of Modern History at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, and Professor Ingrid Rowland, Department of History, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA, who will be lecturing on issues of methodology of historical research applied to the studies on the XVII and XVIII centuries
• Discussions in small seminar groups on cross-disciplinary issues related to historical criticism and methodologies, conducted with the support of scholars who won the scholarships of the Baroque Study Programme at the Foundation in the years 2013-2017
• Formative sessions on digital humanities and digital tools applied to research
• Occasions to present and discuss participants’ research
• A presentation of the exhibition Roma, Torino, Parigi 1680-1750, which is a product of the project Antico e Moderno. Roma, Torino, Parigi 1680-1750, curated by Michela di Macco and Giuseppe Darda- nello and developed by the Foundation. The exhibition will be on view at Venaria Reale in Spring 2020
• Guided tours to key art historical places in Torino, with particular attention to the Royal Museums and their collections

During the Summer School, and particularly during the workshop sessions conducted by experts, the participants will have the possibility to share and exchange critical and methodological points of view on the research they submitted when they applied for the summer school.

The outcomes of these sessions might be included in papers for a future collective publication in an electronic version with ISBN, at the Foundation’s expense.

A certificate of participation from the Foundation will be provided at the end of the Summer School.

Calendar and course program

The calendar, the course program, a complete list with all the attending Professors and all the necessary information will be published on the website of the Foundation at the following link www.fondazione1563.it (“Link”) by July 2019.

How to submit an application

The Summer School will be activated only with a minimum of 15 participants, a maximum of 20 participants is allowed.

The Candidates will have to apply only through the specific application form that can be found at the following link: www.fondazione1563.it by 5 PM of May 31, 2019. The candidates must upload their curriculum vitae et studiorum (“CV”) and the abstract of a research that is already concluded or ongoing. The abstract must be written in Italian and in English (minimum 2000 characters’ spaces included, maxi- mum 4000 characters’ spaces included), bibliography included.

The research should present new critical perspectives relevant to the subject of the Summer School.

Evaluation and selection criteria

The Candidates will be selected according to a meritocratic criteria based on the curriculum and the relevance of the submitted research.

The Candidates will be informed of the selection result by June 15, 2019 via the email address they included on the application form.

The selected candidates will receive the attendance form that will have to be signed for acceptance and returned, on pain of forfeiture, within 7 working days starting from the date of the communication of having been selected by the Foundation.

Costs and Fees 

The selected Candidates might be asked to confirm their commitment to participate in the Summer School by making a deposit of € 100 that will be returned upon their participation in the Summer School in its entirety (except absence for unjustified reasons) and no later than October 30, 2019.

The participation in the Summer School is free. The Foundation will also cover the costs of the living expenses (accommodation and food) for the period running from the night of September 1 to the night of September 6 included, as identified by the Foundation. In addition, the Foundation will cover the costs of the guided tours, the transfer from/to the venue of the school.

Travelling expenses to and from Torino are not covered by the Foundation and the Foundation will not cover the expenses of any extra night in Torino after September 6 or of anything that is not clearly stated here.

The Foundation reserves the right to suspend, modify or cancel this selection procedure or the Summer School in any moment at its incontestable discretion, without that being in any way for the Candidates a right or a demand to claim any refund, compensation or reimbursement.
