Argument

What is the place of women at African universities today? What opportunities and solutions exist to imagine, plan and promote national and international women’s academic careers? How to facilitate the reconciliation of professional life with private and family life? Based on these questions, the workshop aims to discuss the challenges and opportunities of female academic careers in African contexts. It will consist of a coaching workshop and a round table.

The workshop, which will be held in two sessions in November 2019 and April 2020, is intended for female researchers from African countries and/or affiliated to African universities at the beginning of their careers (priority will be given to postdocs in social sciences and humanities), who will be able to exchange on their professional experiences, reflect together on career prospects and strengthen their networks. The workshop session in November 2019 will focus on self-expression and research presentation, the workshop in April 2020 on gender, generation and work-life balance. Participants of the 2018 workshop can reapply.

The German Historical Institute of Paris (GHIP) is an international research centre in history affiliated to the Max Weber Foundation – German Institutes for the Humanities Abroad of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In partnership with the Centre de recherches sur les politiques sociales (CREPOS), it is conducting a research programme on “The Bureaucratization of African Societies” in Dakar. GHIP is a member of the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), which is based at the University of Ghana (Legon) and sponsored by the BMBF. The workshop is part of MIASA’s Women’s Promotion Program, and is organized in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation of Senegal.
