Summary
The goal of this Workshop is to document how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting tourism, including its industry, holiday practices, travel imaginations or tourist’s representations. It will question the transformations in mobility and migrations as the pandemic leads to the closure of airports and restricts travel: how does that affect privileged ultra-privileged mobilites, holiday practices, their motivations and justifications. We will also question what this pandemic reveals about the manufacture of travel imaginations from the perspective of the transport and hotel industry and travelers, and the evolution of the representations of the foreign tourist, who in a few weeks have gone from objects of desire to subjects of contamination.

Argument
The goal of this Workshop is to document how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting tourism, including its industry, holiday practices, travel imaginations or tourist’s representations. It will question the transformations in mobility and migrations as the pandemic leads to the closure of airports and restricts travel: how does that affect privileged ultra-privileged mobilities, holiday practices, their motivations and justifications. We will also question what this pandemic reveals about the manufacture of travel imaginations from the perspective of the transport and hotel industry and travelers, and the evolution of the representations of the foreign tourist, who in a few weeks have gone from objects of desire to subjects of contamination.
Organised as a continuation of the 16th season of the TRIP seminar (Tourism: Research, Institutions, Practices), this Workshop will welcome papers from different disciplines (anthropology, sociology, geography, history, economics, etc.). Papers may be based on direct or digital investigations, at macro or micro scale. We would be interested in proposals related, but not limited to:
- public policies and their reconfiguration
- the transformation of tourism practices and representations due to the pandemic
- the evolution of the traveller's material culture and the platform economy.
- Field experience disrupted by the eruption of the pandemic.
We will also welcome historical insights into the effects of previous pandemics, such as the influenza on the holidays of 1918 or 1968-1969.
Submission guidelines
Applicants should send a short biography, as well as the title and abstract (max. 500 words) of their paper
by 10 December 2020
