  Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st centuries

  Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert / L'expertise médicale aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

  Eating at work (XVIIIe-XXIth centuries)

  Eating at work, considered in the broad sense as all food consumption practices related to an employed occupation, both everyday and exceptional, in times of strike or during celebrations, constitutes a privileged observatory of social practices, whether they relate to hierarchical power relations or to horizontal, egalitarian sociability in the world of work. The last three centuries (XVIII-XXI centuries) have seen profound changes in the ways in which food is consumed at work, exposing the transformation of societies and their relationship to work, nutrition and taste. The movement seems to concern Europe and beyond, a dimension to be explored in our work, even so we assume that its rhythms varied widely.

  GT 44, Congrès de l'Association française de sociologie à Nantes (2013)

  À l'occasion du congrès 2013 de l'AFS aura lieu à Nantes du 2 au 5 septembre, le GT 44 « justice sociale » souhaite offrir un espace de dialogue et d’échanges entre les sociologies de la justice et les sociologies de la domination et propose pour cela une interrogation large sur la problématique de l’articulation entre ces deux manières d’appréhender les fondements de la réunion des individus en collectif : la justice (et l’association contractuelle) et la domination. Selon quelles modalités concrètes cette tension entre justice et domination autour de la question de la légitimité et de la légitimation du juste se traduit-elle dans les différents champs de la vie sociale : travail, emploi, éducation, politiques sociales, droits des groupes « minoritaires », etc. ?

  The recommendations of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology refer to the importance of investment in non-pharmacological approaches to handling pain and distress as important  components of treatment. In  this context, there are numerous benefits associated with the approach of Therapeutic Recreation strategies, innovative in Portuguese territory. Conceptually, the Therapeutic Recreation assumes promoting adaptation to changes that the patient faces in a context of hospitalization; it aims to restore the physical well-being, mental and emotional  health of the patient, intending to full recovery. The Holistic perspective often results in a more positive set of experiences by the patient and family in the management of illness and  hospitalization.

  En occident, la tendance à l’individualisme, les transformations de la structure familiale, la mobilité sociale et l’urbanisation aboutissent au fait que les parents sont de plus en plus nombreux à se retrouver isolés de leur famille après la naissance de leur bébé. Ils peuvent alors se sentir très seuls pour faire face aux attentes, anxiétés et tâtonnements bien légitimes avec un nouveau-né. Cette situation, relativement nouvelle en anthropologie, pourrait avoir des répercutions autant sur le « devenir parent » que le « devenir bébé » et les perspectives de soin des professionnels. La place de la famille demande à être ainsi réévaluée pour comprendre les nouveaux enjeux de la parentalité, la vie psychique du bébé et son développement.

Freud situait trois causes à la souffrance psychique de l’être humain: le corps toujours trop fragile, le monde extérieur toujours hostile et dangereux et enfin autrui toujours rival dans la réalisation du bonheur. Ce sont les trois axes principaux qui organiseront les travaux de ce colloque.

  Cahiers de la recherche sur l’éducation et les savoirs issue no. 13

  Ce numéro thématique veut approfondir la question des transformations de l’enseignement supérieur et des mobilités étudiantes dans un nouveau contexte mondialisé et compétitif. Il porte sur l’ensemble des mobilités étudiantes Sud-Sud, de façon à introduire une dimension comparative intéressante en regard des évolutions en cours à l'échelle internationale. Il s’efforce de mettre en lumière un débat scientifique « du Sud » et « au Sud » autour du questionnement suivant : doit-on considérer que les pays du Sud restent dans un positionnement dépendantiste par rapport à la pression idéologique et économique internationale des pays du Nord ? Sont-ils en mesure de détourner à leur profit une part du marché universitaire des pays industrialisés du Nord ? Assistons-nous à la formation d’un transfert de savoirs Sud-Sud sur le modèle de transfert Nord / Sud ? Ou encore : les pays du Sud mettent-ils en place leur propre modèle d’internationalisation du savoir ?

  This will be the fourth meeting in the series organized by the research centre EMMA (University Paul-Valéry, Montpellier 3, France) over 2011-13 which has gathered leading scholars in the field to identify and assess the joint evolutions of “Diaspora Studies” and  “Race studies” to better understand: 1) how these approaches can be cross-fertilising; 2) how socio-economic and political changes have affected race relations and diasporic communities; 3) how literature and the arts, the social sciences and cultural studies have seized that question. This project entails a redefinition of terms and concepts and the confrontation of different, but not necessarily divergent, perspectives.

  Le travail indépendant a récemment fait l’objet de questions et d’investigations en partie nouvelles comme l’exploration plus systématique des conditions de travail des « indépendants » ou l’examen de leur santé. À la suite de ces initiatives récentes, nous invitons chercheur-e-s, responsables d’études et doctorant-e-s à une journée d’échanges et de confrontations sur le travail indépendant, abordé de trois points de vue : les conditions du travail indépendant ; l’état de santé des indépendants (mesures, comportements, attitudes) et les façons dont ces professionnels disent, se remémorent et racontent leur(s) histoire(s) de santé ou de maladie. L’articulation de l’état de santé et des activités professionnelles ainsi que du déroulé des carrières. Les situations des femmes indépendantes ou compagnes d’indépendants constitue un thème commun à ces trois axes.

  Ambiance and Atmospheres: Encountering New Material Frontiers

  RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2013

  Recent work on affect in Anglophone human geography has opened up new material frontiers by theorizing affective atmospheres (Anderson 2009; Bissell 2010; McCormack 2008). In such work we see an adjustment of thinking towards and around the relations between bodies and their environment by considering the ways in which bodies are situated within diffuse, distributed, sensible, and potentially turbulent volumes. Such an emphasis on the atmospheric, taken in both its meteorological and felt/affective sense, is in many ways tied to an expanded conception of materiality that draws attention to “the vibrant, constitutive, aleatory, and even immaterial indices” of materiality and materialization (Coole and Frost 2010: 14; Bennett 2010).

  Le colloque a pour objet de documenter et d’analyser les biographies et la production scientifique d’auteurs belges défunts, célèbres ou oubliés. Il n’a pas pour ambition de commémorer ces auteurs, mais bien de resituer leur œuvre par rapport aux transformations sociales de leur époque et aux évolutions de leurs disciplines de référence. D’ores et déjà, quelques questions se posent en ce qui concerne le contexte spécifique de la Belgique, comme l’évolution des sciences sociales dans un pays marqué par des clivages structurels entre laïques et catholiques, entre flamands et francophones, entre libéraux et socialistes, clivages qui fondent la « pilarisation » de la société belge, au sens d’un système basé sur une tradition de compromis entre grands groupes institués.

  Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias seeks to investigate the history of the radical reshaping of the Soviet World (in our words - the Second World), that Ada Louise Huxtable reported on in the late 1960s. This project aims to bring together scholarly contributions on the various endeavors in the Second World to conceive, build, and inhabit a socialist cityscape that was an alternative to the segregated spaces of capitalist cities and the atomized world of suburbia. Imagining and designing urban space were undeniably powerful instruments of forging socialist modernity. Second World Urbanity pays close attention to the tensions between global challenges and locally driven agendas that made architects, planners, and ordinary dwellers alter socialist modernity according to more particular interests.

  Phantom Borders in the Political Behaviour and Electoral Geography in East Central Europe

  We understand phantom borders as political borders, which politically/legally do not exist anymore but seem to appear in different forms and modes of social action and practices today, as for example voting as one part of political behaviour. The conference deals with historical borders, made visible in discourses and maps concerning political behavior, as for instance in electoral maps. Our aim is to challenge the historical interrelation of current political behaviour, the involvement of geopolitical images, internal as external governance contexts and transnational networks for (re)constructing historical borders as phantom borders. We are interested in case studies especially about East Central Europe, but also in studies from all over the world combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, addressing the main questions of the conference. Case studies may address different levels and scales from local to transnational.

  La libéralisation des échanges, la révolution des transports ou encore le démantèlement des accords de Breton Woods apparaissent comme des éléments fondateurs du système économique mondialisé qui est aujourd’hui celui dans lequel nous vivons. Les théoriciens du commerce et du libre-échange, comme Adam Smith ou encore David Ricardoont, dès les XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, mis en relief les conséquences économiques et sociales du commerce pratiqué à l’échelle internationale. Ces activités commerciales, loin d’être insignifiantes pour la construction des sociétés humaines, ont souvent été présentées comme des facteurs de modification, de transformation ou d’uniformisation des territoires. Partant de ce constat, nous proposons de réfléchir aux rapports entre les territoires entant qu’espaces appropriés et modifiés par les sociétés humaines et les pratiques commerciales entendues comme l’ensemble des activités relatives à l’échange des marchandises (achat, vente, mise à disposition ou transport).
