Proximity and intraregional aspects of tourism
RGS-IBG Annual International Conference
This session intends to discuss the role of proximity and intraregional aspects in the ways tourism works. In a context of intense mobilities, classic dichotomies such as tourist-resident, home-away or self-other are being challenged and several questions are arising as a result. What does exotic mean in a globalized context? Which is the relationship between everyday life and tourism? What are the implications of proximity and intraregional tourism for land planning and tourism policies? (How) can tourism play a role in connecting people and nearby places? Is there a future for ‘tourism without travel’? How does proximity tourism relate to local citizenship and community responsibilities? This session welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers aiming to share new approaches in the understanding of these phenomenons.

Inequalities in and through science and technology as challenges for sociological research
CFP ESA, Research Network 24, Sociology of Science and Technology Network (SSTNET)
Increasing social inequalities, exacerbated by neoliberal policies and international economic crisis, have been an issue of science and technology studies (STS) even prior to the crisis. Instead of normative claims about the socially beneficial or harmful role of science and technology, a more complex sociological perspective has been promoted. This perspective, postulating that S&T impacts are closely interrelated to social context and circumstances has the potential to be more productive in studying the relationship between techno-scientific development and social inequalities. The global economy, with its increasing role of S&T, seems to increase inequalities within contemporary societies, as well as between them.

Le patrimoine au défi de l'interculturalité
Revue Alterstice

Since the end of the Second World War, the “founding fathers” of Europe have often been celebrated, yet the women who also helped to build a united Europe have often been forgotten. Louise Weiss, sometimes called the “grand-mother of Europe”, is undoubtedly the most famous among them. But what about the role of the various pro-European movements of the interwar period, such as the European Women’s Lobby, or of leading figures such Ursula Hirschmann, Jacqueline Nonon, Fausta Deshormes La Valle (founder of the periodical Femmes d’Europe) and many other female contributors to European integration? When, in what ways and with what means did they work to build a Europe that was more equal in terms of sex and gender?

Lyon

Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context
A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.
