Conference, symposium - History
Space and scale in missionary agency (1880–1920)
The symposium revolves around the question of the agency of the Christian missionaries and their sending organizations which have been, to varying degrees, major actors of social and cultural mutations among the people and societies they worked with. Through the diverse presentations from scholars of various geographical and academic fields, we hope to get a better understanding of the impact of European and North American Christian missions at the turn of the twentieth century, and spur greater interest on this subject.

Religions, Individuals, and Communities in the Americas
Revue interdisciplinaire de travaux sur les Amériques (RITA) n°18
As recurring objects of analysis running the whole gamut of humanities and social sciences, the ties between religions, communities, and the individuals within them have constantly been used to gauge tensions within social structures. All the more so on the American continent, where the destructive spiral of colonization set off waves of migration, and the pluralism within the communities and religions from the Northwest Territories to Tierra del Fuego delineates both their differences and similarities. Is there such a thing as specifically American structures when it comes to religions and communities? That is one of the questions posed by the present 18th issue of RITA.

Call for papers - Early modern

Space and scale in missionary agency (1880-1920)
The revival of the Christian faith in the European and North American continents (GreatAwakenings – the Higher Life Movement) during an age of technical and technological innovations inmeans of transportation and communication prompted many Protestant and Catholic missionaries, withthe support of their respective churches, to sail to foreign lands for religious proselytizing. Evangelicalmissionaries and their sending organizations have been, to varying degrees, major actors of social andcultural mutations among the people and societies they worked with. To fully comprehend the impactof European and North American evangelical missions at the turn of the twentieth century, we mustnot only consider missionaries’ social and religious agency at the local level, but also develop thediscussion to the regional, national, and transnational levels.

The Invisibles and Heritage. What Heritage? Who for?
Revue « In Situ »
Quels risques présentent-elles (essentialisme, institutionnalisation) ?

Visual Ecologies: Image experiences and lives in the age of Capitalocene
While “ecology” refers in a general sense to the science that studies the relationships of living beings with each other and with their environment, it is also used more locally and transitively to qualify the study of a specific environment. Similarly, while visual ecology can be broadly understood as a relational study of the visual field, it also seems possible to imagine more singular visual ecologies, localized around a particular imagery (colonial studies, gender studies, femenism studies, ethnic studies, etc.). As such, images are no longer just representations, they are both environments and entities that can be transformed and transformed, forms of action that are part of a pragmatic experience of the world. The ecology of images, images of ecology, the ecological impact of images… the hypothesis formulated for this international colloquium is to think together these major directions between, on the one hand, the question of images and their circulation, and on the other, our climatic and environmental situation.

“L’Année du Maghreb” Journal, research dossier 33, 2025
The aim of this special issue is to bring together different perspectives and approaches, in order to understand how contemporary films produced in Maghreb reflect or anticipate the social changes underway. It also looks at the extent to which the filmmakers of this new generation are breaking with classical Maghreb cinema, while at the same time taking part in a continuous line of avant-garde practices in Maghreb, from explorations of popular traditions, to the porosity between fiction and documentary, or the introduction of new techniques (editing, light camera, etc.). The purpose of this issue is to highlight this continuity, both diachronically within the region and synchronically, through a comparative approach with practices and films from the rest of the world.

The sacred, the spiritual and the religious in contemporary global societies
Nakan, a learned society, is organising an international online Study day on Thursday 14 December 2023 at the Université des Antilles, entitled Le sacré, le spirituel et le religieux dans les sociétés globales contemporaines (The sacred, the spiritual and the religious in contemporary global societies). The aim is to examine the relationship that the Western man has today with the notions of the sacred, the spiritual and the religious, and to reassess the scope of the terms in question, in the light of literature, art, philosophy, anthropology, the sciences, the arts and cultural practices, etc. What status do these concepts hold in collective representations and imaginations? What is their semantic and semiological significance? What is their relationship with the notions of syncretism and supersyncretism? All these questions deserve to be rethought and discussed at a time of major paradigm shifts in Western societies.

Contemporary African Art and New Media: Reflections on a New “Intermediatique Axis of Relevance”
This collective work project addresses the question of the encounter between contemporary African art, new media and intermediality from a creative point of view. It attempts to rethink this encounter in the light of media ondines. The contributions invited in this call for papers require a multidisciplinary approach, in order to better question the mutations that characterise contemporary African artistic creation. We are particularly interested in articles that broaden the aesthetic and temporal categories through which contemporary art, new media and intermediality are traditionally understood.

Seminar Series: Women in French Australia
In this seminar we propose to re-centre various cultural representations arising from literature (oral and written), artistic mediums, media, music and cinema by Francophone Sub-Saharan women. Importantly, this seminar aims to go beyond the denunciation-celebration axis that has so far tinged many a study on polygamy in cultural representations from the continent to explore polygamy in all its forms, including unofficial extra-marital relations implying tacit acceptance of polygamy (Boni, 139), and modes of expression.
