“Rhythm” in the Concepts of Audio and Visual Arts

This call is meant to establish communication and interaction between different cultures and to form a scientific community that includes researchers from the ocean to the Gulf, in addition to addressing common civilizational problems. This International Scientific Conference is dedicated to “Rhythm”. Rhythm regulates the durations of sounds in music, supporting its process and layers of its hierarchy to deliver an expressive discourse based on harmony and dissonance, on stillness and sound. Even in the freest melodies (Adlib), the rhythm does not disappear, but rather its presence takes a random, regular shape. Cinema does not differ in the interactions of the image and music, but also indulges in the manifestations of rhythm to imbue the viewer with sensory interactions that oscillate between tension and calm.

The notion of “transfer” is understood here in a broad sense, as a process in which objects, ideas and practices are transferred across two or several cultures.

Nature et paysages dans la bande dessinée polar

On a coutume d’étudier dans le polar, tant dans le film que dans le roman, l’espace urbain, afin d’en souligner ses caractéristiques, qu’il soit adjuvant ou opposant. Le roman noir, lui, accorde une importance considérable à la ville. Les nombreuses études sur la dialectique entre bande dessinée et espace interrogent l’espace urbain au sens architectural. Comme l’espace architectural - particulièrement urbain, a déjà fait l’objet d’études chez les bédéistes ainsi que chez les théoriciens, nous souhaitons engager une réflexion nouvelle, sur l’articulation entre la nature et ses paysages, et la bande dessinée polar. Cette nécessité s’impose dans la mesure où les études qui se sont intéressées à la nature dans tous états sont peu orientées sur le genre de la bande dessinée polar.

The term crisis, as defined by Souriau (1990), designates any dangerous and decisive disturbance which calls into question the ordinary course of things. On the other hand, the notion of emergence, formally defined, constitutes the idea of the appearance of a nascent phenomenon. This concept implies a pluralistic ontology, that is, a plural and evolving universe, in which new forms of existence appear, but may also disappear. The objective of this conference is to reflect on the way in which countries have faced educational challenges in times of environmental, health, migratory, gender, social and/or political crises at different moments in history.

Based on the pioneering work of Bento Prado Júnior and Franklin Leopoldo e Silva, Bergsonian studies have developed significantly in Brazil over the last twenty years. This Webseminar will be an occasion to discuss the potentialities of Bergon’s work, explored in an original way through the diversity of schools and academic backgrounds of all continents. Dans son cinquième numéro, la revue du RIRS s’arrête sur les frontières des disciplines d'un côté en tant que territoires souverains et de l'autre en tant que territoires mitoyens. En effet, si la pratique pluridisciplinaire d’autrefois était le reflet d’une curiosité travaillée en amalgame d’objets et de connaissances acquises et accumulées, elle ne permet certainement pas de combler les vides que l’on imagine entre les disciplines. Il en résulte donc la nécessité de porter un regard croisé sur le monde et de prendre en compte différentes démarches pour que la réalité puisse apparaître dans toute sa complexité et avec tous ses reliefs à la quête du sens par un « au-delà » des disciplines. Cet idéal est exprimé par l’émergence d’approches nouvelles, celles de l’interdisciplinarité et de la transdisciplinarité.

“Phusis kai phuta”. Nature and plants in Ancient Greece

Phusis kai phuta is a research network that aims to gather and share ongoing research on nature (phusis) and plants (phuta) in ancient Greece. We are currently running our fourth online seminar series. We are particularly interested in three sets of interrelated topics. (1) Vegetal poetics: when and to which ends were plants mentionend in Greek poetical, philosophical and medical texts? (2) Botanical analogies: what models did plants offer to ancient Greek authors for speculating about cosmogony and cosmology, politics and society, psychology and ethics, the body and kinship? (3) The history of phusis: what concepts did this term cover exactly and how are we to grasp them without ironing out their differences from our concept(s) of nature?

The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention, and the American University of Paris hope to provide a virtual forum on May 9-10, 2022, for scholars from multiple disciplines and humanitarian activists to process the causes and consequences of the war in the Ukraine. Because of the urgency and ongoing nature of the conflict, we are not expecting polished academic presentations but short (10-15 minutes) thought pieces that help to elucidate various aspects and interpretations of the war. A primary aim is to give Ukrainian and Russian scholars the opportunity to express themselves and their point of view.

Qu'est-ce qu'artificialiser veut dire ?

Définitions comparées de l’artificialisation des sols en contexte de contrainte foncière forte

L’introduction de la doctrine « zéro artificialisation nette » dans le plan Biodiversité en 2018 et la promulgation de la loi Climat et résilience en août 2021 ont placé au cœur de l’actualité immobilière la nécessité de réduire la consommation de terrains dans la construction. La réflexion scientifique a exploré de nombreuses voies afin de répondre à cet impératif. Il a cependant été rapidement fait état de la difficulté de mesurer correctement l’artificialisation des sols. Le problème se situerait en amont : les définitions de ce que l’on entend par « artificialisation » ne sont toujours pas concordantes. Cette journée d’étude invite les spécialistes de la question à apporter une lecture actualisée de la notion d’artificialisation, notamment dans les champs juridique, économique, écologique, agronomique ou urbanistique, mais aussi dans toute autre approche permettant d’enrichir le débat contradictoire sur un objet devenu politique.

Faire l’histoire du sida en périphérie

L’histoire de l’épidémie de sida a été largement étudiée à partir de la perspective des grands centres urbains des pays développés, comme Paris, Londres, New York ou Toronto. Nous nous proposons donc ici de prendre le contre-pied de cette tendance historiographique de fond et d’explorer l’histoire du VIH-sida depuis les périphéries, c’est-à-dire à la fois depuis des villes ou des zones géographiques considérées comme « secondaires » dans leurs espaces nationaux ou continentaux (versus des centres urbains comme Paris, Londres ou New York), ou à partir de communautés (les lesbiennes, les LGBT+ racisé·es, les personnes en situation de handicap) et de groupes professionnels (les infirmièr·es, les professionnel·les du travail social) dont l’implication a été sous-étudiée, ou encore à partir d’archives et de perspectives rares, voire inédites.
