Global tax chains: Actors and practices of global capitalism in the second of the half of the 20th century

As chains of wealth became global in the world economy (Seabroke&Wigan, 2022), so did tax strategies. These topics have gained increasing attention over the past fifteen years as the crisis of 2007/2008 renewed the discussion on inequalities and (fiscal) justice. Humanities and social sciences have played an important role in framing debates on this topic. Over the past twenty to thirty years, wealth has come to be produced less by manufacturing cars or building houses than by moving capital across jurisdictions, creating multi-jurisdictional spaces where national states, global companies, local financial “plumbers” and international organisations developed, maintained and governed global tax chains.

Strengthening libraries emergency preparedness and response

As we move our efforts in conservation towards giving a sustainable dimension to our practices, risk preparedness is a critical part of the use of our heritage. In a context of multiple conflicts and climate change, libraries, archives and museums from around the world are facing disasters including earthquakes, fires, floods and man-made destructions. They highlight the potential severity of the challenges in emergency response situations. The World Library and Information Congress satellite meeting is initiated with the aim to provide practical information and tools based on recent experiences and learning points for the risk assessment and mitigation, response and recovery phases.

    The History of Office Buildings

    Perspectives on Users and Uses

At the two-day workshop Perspectives on Uses and Users in the History of Office Buildings, which will take place at the Belval campus of the University of Luxembourg (Esch-sur-Alzette) on 30 November and 1 December 2023, we aim to deconstruct the managerial and architectural determinants of the 20th-century office building. The analytical focus lies on the dialectic relationship between planning and usage. Concretely, we seek to investigate how clients, architects, and interior designers interacted with users of office buildings, and how they subsequently modified their conceptions (or failed to do so). Conversely, we are interested in the bottom-up perspective: how did office workers voice their opinion on the buildings in which they were housed?

Trusting the State? Law, Bureaucracies and Politics

From uncertain relationships with frontline workers, public servants and even judges, trust in the state emerges as a central issue in the relations between the state and citizens and users of public policies. This workshop aims to explore the place of trust and mistrust in interactions with, or perceptions of the state in various contexts, and to further explore how trust in the state and its institutions is constructed, enacted or contested. To do that, we connect and combine three entry points through which state-citizen interactions have been considered so far: politics, bureaucracies, and the law.

Residues of the Past: (De)constructing urban histories

    2023 IRS Summer School

The focus of the summer school is to examine how historical strata have been understood, constructed, and interpreted in different European cities from the post-war period to the present day. On the one hand, the participants will learn how historic buildings were integrated into the post-war reconstruction plans on both sides of the “Iron Curtain”. On the other hand, we will discuss how historical authenticity has been established in the preservation of monuments and what might have been overlooked in the process. Finally, participants will debate how people (individually and in groups) remember and what this means for our understanding of the past. The students should also investigate how digital methods can help to understand today’s memory landscapes.

    Translation and the Periodical

This conference seeks to investigate whether periodical translation has particular qualities that differentiate the practice from other forms of translation, notably for print books. The discursive techniques of periodical translation, and its key role in the mediation of culture and the dynamic exploration of the present -long argued to be at the core of periodicals’ specificity-, are likely to be touchstones for answering this question. Therefore the international conference “Translation and the Periodical” aims to push forward decisively the developing conversations on cultural translation in periodicals. The conference will start with a postgraduate workshop on 13 September, followed by the main conference on 14 and 15 September.

    Mapping violences

    EHESS Summer School 2023

By crossing different disciplinary, thematic and cultural approaches, the aim is to endeavor to map violence, to study practices, situations, experiences of violence and their arrangement in topographic, social and mental spaces. The objective is to favour the dialogue between different perspectives of research on violence and more particularly on extreme violence. Be it political violence, state violence, wars, guerrilla wars, revolutions, oppression, massacres, and domestic violence, since it is often -in these contexts- amplified, will also be broached. How are we to observe, define and analyse these violent phenomena? What are the methodological, epistemological and ethical questions specific to these particularly sensitive and fluid objects?

    Religions in Medieval Urban Europe

The subject of religiosity in the medieval urban world encompasses a great multiplicity of themes which readily mingle the Christian, Islamic and Jewish worlds in seeking to understand how religion shaped the way in which the civic space was constructed and understood, the powers that converged in it, and the rituals and practices that guided the daily lives of inhabitants. Accordingly, this year (2023), the Institute of Medieval Studies (FCSH; Nova University, Lisbon) and the City Council of Castelo de Vide will host the VIII International Conference on the Middle Ages, entitled: Religions in Medieval Urban Europe. With a focus on Christian, Islamic and Jewish Europe, researchers from any scientific discipline (History, Archaeology, History of the Art, Literature, among others) are invited to present proposals for sessions and/or individual presentations.

    Ecologizing Economics

Reflexivity, Methods and Interdisciplinarity in the Age of Anthropocene

In the context of a multidimensional ecological crisis, economic analysis is challenged to adapt its methods so that it can remain relevant to contemporary issues. In particular, calls to strengthen the consideration of biogeophysical dynamics are becoming more and more pressing. The aim of this workshop is to bring together young researchers to question the place of economics in the ecosystem of disciplines in the context of ecological emergency. To help us in our reflection, we will have the pleasure to welcome prof. Michiru Nagatsu from the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. We encourage young scholars (widely defined) researching in economics, philosophy, sociology, history of economic thought or any related discipline to apply to this methodological workshop, either as a speaker or as a simple participant.

Knowing the planet: environment, technology, and development in the 19th and 20th centuries

This one-day workshop will interrogate the relationship between environment and technology in developmental projects, practices, and discourses during the 19th and 20th centuries. Several fields such as histories of environment, histories of technology, global history, and histories of development have recently expanded in new directions that could provide fruitful dialogues. All these scholarly shifts are important to a deeper historicization of environmental knowledge in the context of global climate crisis. Bringing together case studies from different geographical settings across the 19th and 20th centuries, the workshop will ask what role has technology played in the production of environmental knowledge? What role has environmental knowledge played in the politics of ‘progress’?

Police Intelligence, from Local to Global. From 1750 to the Present Day

Police and intelligence are two concepts that are intimately and invariably linked. In the emerging field of History of Intelligence, the specific policing aspect of intelligence generally only appears as an aside to its military, diplomatic or economic functions. The aim of this conference is therefore to take a look at police intelligence, to highlight its specific characteristics and its role in the work of law enforcement agencies. It will thus aim to present new developments and consider new approaches in the history of the administrative management of information and, above all, in the history of the police. The conference will not, however, focus solely on this, it will also aim to address the questions, as yet little explored by historians, of the production and use of police intelligence, of the parties and tools involved in its development, and of the content that feeds it.

History of the History of Archaeology: between Archaeologists’ and Historians’ Concerns

Figures, Trends, and Perspectives (International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences - IUPPS 2023 conference)

Since several decades, historians and sociologists of science scrutinize the history of science as a practice. References demonstrate, first, the relevance of investigating who are the writers of disciplinary histories and what are the uses of these histories and, second, archaeologists’ concern to this regard. This session organised by the “History of Archaeology” commission is intended to strengthen these studies from the case of archaeology.

Women’s narratives and European integration history

The history of European integration and Europeanisation has developed into a varied field that has moved on from an initial focus on the vision and achievements of the founding fathers. However, even though women played a vital part in the European project launched after the Second World War, their role has yet to be fully explored. Women tended to remain in the background until they began to be more readily accepted as political leaders, particularly following the first European elections by direct universal suffrage in 1979 and the appointment of the first female European Commissioner in 1989. Against this backdrop, “adding a gender perspective to European memory” and history seems essential.

Transversal Skills for Work and Life: Strengthening Guidance and Validation

    Transval-EU Research Conference

Both in work settings and in daily life, there is a growing need for individuals to develop high-level competences to address complex challenges. Transversal competences set the foundation for personal development, resilience, the ability to communicate and work constructively with others, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage one’s learning and career. Yet transversal competences are. not always valued or made visible in guidance and validation processes for adult learners. TRANSVAL-EU, one of the largest policy experimentations in Europe, has aimed to bridge this gap in guidance and assessment in the area of validation of non-formal and informal learning (VNFIL).

Green Marble 2023. International Meeting on Anthropocene Studies and Ecocriticism

Green Marble 2023 is an international scientific meeting focused on the theme “Ecotourism and Ecotravel in the Anthropocene”. We specifically seek to address and discuss how ecotourism, understood as a form of tourism that involves responsible travel (using sustainable transport) to natural areas, conserving the environment and improving the well-being of the local population, can contribute to a good Anthropocene, the one where we become able to use the unprecedented collective power to act in/on the planet we acquire in a balanced and fair way.
