Spatial Perception in Antiquity from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Taklamakan Desert

Spatial perception in antiquity is a fruitful and intriguing research area that has already received attention since the late 18^th century. The development of separate disciplines dealing with different cultures and sources has, however, led to an often-isolated treatment of such topics in the specific fields of history, philology and (historical) linguistics. This conference intends to provide the opportunity to overcome such isolated treatment and to strengthen the cooperation between the fields by establishing interdisciplinary discussions.

Nous invitons les participant·es de ce colloque à repenser les puissances du végéter dans la littérature et les arts des mondes anglophones et francophones du XIX^e siècle à nos jours. Il s’agira de réfléchir à la place et au rôle actifs du végétal dans les textes et les représentations, ainsi qu’aux enjeux épistémologiques, esthétiques et politiques qui y sont liés. Suivant une perspective anthropo-décentriste, nous réfléchirons à la façon dont le végétal agit avec/sur le monde des êtres humains, l’ordonne ou le désordonne, met en question les savoirs établis, et fait intervenir des rapports de force et de pouvoir, y compris politiques.

The Conference De habitudine Ordinis ad artem. Arts, Religion and Culture in the Capuchin Order between the 16thand 18th centuries aims to explore the difficult and elusive relationship between art culture, religion and the Capuchin Order on an international level, with particular attention to the historical context and the religious dimension, considered an essential prerequisite for understanding artists, the production of art objects, patronage and relations with the secular world on a global scale. With the aim of fostering discussion and scientific debate, any contributions concerning further aspects relevant to the theme of the conference that has not been made explicit above will also be taken into consideration.

Listening In: Conversations on Architectures, Cities and Landscapes 1700-1900

Who do we listen to when we write histories of architectures, cities, and landscapes? How many women authors can we find among our sources? How many of them are cited by those whose research we read? We argue that women and other marginalised groups have always been part of conversations on architectures, cities, and landscapes - but we have not had the space to listen to them. This conference is an invitation to reconstruct such conversations, real, imagined, and metaphorical ones, taking place in the 18^th and 19^th centuries, in any region, in order to diversify the ways we write histories. Taking the art of conversation, integral as both practice and form to the period in Western thought, and repurposing it to dismantle the exclusivity of historiography, this conference calls for contributions which bring women into dialogue with others.

Between Conflict and Accommodation? Christian-Democracy and the Rise of “new social movements”, 1960s-1990s

The aim of this conference is to analyze the relation, conflicts and exchanges, between Christian-democracy and the so-called “new social movements” fromthe 1960s until the early 1990s. It wantsto adopt a reciprocal perspective, looking at the ways in which Christian-Democratic parties and related movements reacted in response to the emergence and development of these movements from the 1960s onwards, and, inversely, at the ways in which these “new social movements” were interconnected, in real and imagined terms, to Christian-Democracy. The geographical scope is not limited to Western Europe, but also includes other regions, most notably Latin America.

Horses for whom. Military and agricultural interests in equine breeding during peacetime (1700-1900)

Sixth biennial conference of the European Rural History Organization (EURHO)

This session suggests to examine the relationship between armies and livestock, a topic that has been largely neglected by both military and agricultural scholars. In most cases, this relation was confined to the requisition of livestock for slaughter, for the hauling of artillery and other transport services during conflicts. Whatever the links between farming and military institutions, from 18th to 20th century the beginning of a major transformation of husbandry in general occurred. In the 19th century even States and military authorities began to pay systematic attention to livestock. Likely, the equine sector, saw the emergence, during peacetime, of institutions to increase the stock of animals available in the event of war and to improve their quality. The same period saw the first initatives aimed at the improvement of animals for civilian uses

Good and evil in the Germanic Middle Ages

1st PhD Conference Associazione Italiana di Filologia Germanica (AIFG)

The concepts of good and evil are expressed, from a lexical point of view, in different ways in different Germanic languages and at the same time they are declined in different forms depending on linguistic and literary traditions. The theme takes into account texts of different types: religiouos, legal, medical and so on. Starting from these assumptions, we encourage prospective participants to submit proposals which deal with the theme from a literary, philological, linguistic and/or historical perspective. The call is open to PhD students and PhDs in Germanic Philology and Linguistics.

This conference aims to explore the dialogue between Venice and the Adriatic area from a specific perspective: the construction of the past. Violent Turns: Sources, Interpretations, Responses

The aim of this international conference is to provide researchers with an interdisciplinary platform to investigate and debate the question of contemporary irruptions of political violence and to inquire into the different responses intended to counteract violence. When and why do individuals, groups, and societies come to believe that peaceful means and legal avenues of redress, including non-violent civil disobedience, are insufficient or improper to achieve a social or political goal and to view violent action as morally legitimate and necessary for change? Can one identify trends shaping recourse to violence by parts of the populace? What role does state violence play in the dialectic? When, if ever, is political violence legitimate? How can violence be averted?

The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) is organising a study day which aim is to further clarify our understanding of the artistic exchanges and influences that took place between the Low Countries and the Iberian world during the period 1400-1715. The study day will bring together international researchers from academic and scientific institutions in France, Poland, Spain and Belgium. The meeting will complement and nuance the traditional accounts of the artistic relations between the two territories, highlighting the complexity of the global interactions and exchanges that linked the Iberian world and the Low Countries to each other, but also to Europe and the rest of the world.

Magnats, entremetteurs et contrebandiers : les distributeurs de films et leurs réseaux au XXe siècle

Moguls, Go-betweens and Smugglers: Film Distributors and their Networks in the Twentieth Century

This workshop aims at revisiting the history of film importers/exporters and distributors throughout the 20^th century by examining the social inscription of their trade. Moguls, go-betweens and/or smugglers, film traders were main actors in determining the value of films, building film markets, bringing out audiences by giving them (or not) access to the films. Yet, the history of cinema has long ignored the figure of the distributor, too bland to obscure the ethereal figure of the author, too close to the limelight to interest those, less numerous, researching “those wonderful people out there in the dark,” the audience. This workshop seeks to reconstruct the diversity of networks these businessmen/women used to maintain, how they positioned themselves in relation to their peers, remembering that many distributors also acted as exhibitors and producers.

The Project of History – Histories of Projects

Architects / Historians in Post-war Italy

The multifaceted and nuanced relationship between history and design has marked late twentieth-century Italian architectural culture, and have been its most distinct characteristic on the international scene. This conference aims to explore the exchanges, tangencies, overlaps and frictions between designers – of the architectural object as much as of the city and the territory – and architectural historians in the cultural, political, economic, and social context of Italy in the second half of the 20^th century. Intended to discuss the specific contributions of individual figures, moments, and sites of exchange, it invites studies based on archival research that are also open to questioning the broader historical, cultural, and disciplinary conditions that shaped dialogues between architects and historians in post-war Italy.

Was bleibt von der Natur übrig, wenn sie nicht länger als das „Große Außen” gelten kann? Angesichts des Klimanotstands wird eine andere Politik der Natur dringlich, sowie eine andere Ästhetik. Wie lässt sich Natur denken, die nicht mehr jenseits von uns liegt, sondern uns durchwirkt? Wie vermag Natur umgekehrt jedoch auch als etwas anerkannt werden, dass immer schon durch Rekursivität, kurzum: durch Technik, geprägt ist? Natur nach der Natur bedeutet vielleicht nichts anderes als das: Natur entdeckt sich selbst als jene zweite Natur, die sie immer schon war. Als eine Natur der Kunst.

Literary translation as a part of cultural exchange is involved in power relations between nation-states and languages. The goal of this international interdisciplinary conference is to contribute to the discussions on literary translation in the international circulation of books and ideas. The organizers invite scholars from different disciplines (literary studies, translation studies, cultural studies, sociology, information studies, linguistics, etc.) to contribute with their research to the study of literary translation as a social practice that takes place in a certain context, inseparable from institutions, power relations, and cultural politics.

A networked urban world: small, medium, and large cities (from the Middle Ages to Contemporary Times)

The interest of urban historiography on small towns has manifested itself, continuously, but not very intensely, since the 1980s, namely through the study of urban hierarchies, the spatial distribution of towns in a region, or city/city relations. Until now, however, the topic of the relationships established between small, medium and large cities, although not omitted, is far from being able to be considered consolidated as a research topic. Mainly, the place that small towns occupy/occupied in large-scale interconnection phenomena and what are the components, modalities, intensity, and relevance of their (eventual) involvement was little questioned.
