    Conversations corporelles

Eurasian legal systems in a world in transition

Economic prosperity or disparity, and the return of politics in international law

The pace of history has accelerated in recent years and even months, well beyond a new cold-war dynamic. Trading nations entertain friendly commerce relations but they also engage in trade- and information-wars, thereby mixing regional construction and inter-regional deconstruction; that is, merging economic integration and political disintegration. Eurasia, with half of the world population, would represent, if economically and regionally integrated, the greatest consumer market and productive capacity on earth. Considering this geo-political/economic background, the question is simply whether such a Eurasian economic integration is achievable or not. Here, the “return of politics” through the neo-role played by States in Covid-management and, from 2022, in international economic law and other wider issues, is proving a challenge for analysts of the ‘legalisation’ of regions.

    Rythme dans l’art

Rhythm is a central element in the creation of meaning in art, and its configuration is such that it requires a multi, inter and transdisciplinary approach. The difference of materials, procedures and events masks the resemblance of rhythmic phenomena that are similar in different arts and hides their identity or their homology. In the work of some scholars, the concepts do not seem to belong to a particular artistic discipline, being rather characteristic of the rhythmic phenomenon. The objective of this conference is to provide an instance for exchanging knowledge, concerns and aspirations for those who have been devoting themselves to the study of rhythm and artistic creation on the subject.

    Violent Turns: Sources, Interpretations, Responses

The aim of this international conference is to provide researchers with an interdisciplinary platform to investigate and debate the question of contemporary irruptions of political violence and to inquire into the different responses intended to counteract violence. When and why do individuals, groups, and societies come to believe that peaceful means and legal avenues of redress, including non-violent civil disobedience, are insufficient or improper to achieve a social or political goal and to view violent action as morally legitimate and necessary for change? Can one identify trends shaping recourse to violence by parts of the populace? What role does state violence play in the dialectic? When, if ever, is political violence legitimate? How can violence be averted?

A History of Constant Reform: Crime and Punishment in the Twentieth Century

In the twentieth century, laws, legal institutions, and prison facilities seemed to be characterized by a constant process of reform. Though there were occasional accelerations and downturns, the reform movement never entirely stopped. Thus, the discourses and practices of criminality and of legal sanctions and their execution evolved substantially, while the individuals involved in the legal and penal systems – the accused, accusers, lawyers, judges, prison inmates, prison workers, and criminologists – became more diverse in terms of gender, social and geographic origin, professionalization, etc.

    Re-Thinking Photobooks

    Media Constellations in Media Constellations

This workshop will broaden the outlook on photobooks, beyond the canonical understanding of the term, by engaging with a wide variety of books with photographs: photojournalistic and/or thematic monographs, popular book series, coffee-table books, celebratory retrospective volumes, historical (re)collections, manuals, and the like. It will also endeavor to situate the history of the photobook at the intersection of multiple media (with or against which it manifests its medial identity, evolving and changing over time) rather than as a stand-alone genre. Instead, we strive to understand the photobook as an object constituted by media constellations, tying medially diverse content—different kinds of images and writings, drawing on what is technologically available at a given time—and combining it into meaningfully arranged double pages by ways of the layout.

Sticky Films. Conceptual and Material Explorations

Stickiness is ambiguous. Sticky tapes can repair and mend, or accelerate decomposition and destruction. How can we conceptually think of these (un-)desirabilities of stickiness in relation to objects in film and media studies? By capturing the double-meaning of film as both a medium that exists within cultural industries, and as a thin viscous layer atop something, the conceptual and material explorations of films as inherently sticky go against the assumption that current transformations in film and media culture are continuous and smooth. We aim to gather scholars from various fields to think about, with, and through these contradicting or even resisting conceptions of stickiness for the study of configurations of film and media. Bringing erratic examples of stickiness, adhesives, glue, and paste together creates contact zones, and makes configurations knowable as sensible encounters to be explored with care.

The Ethics of “Racechange” in Performance, Adaptations and Tradaptations of Shakespeare’s plays

This seminar, hold by European Shakespeare Research Association (ESRA), aims to analyse race through a “racechange” embodied by the actor on stage and on film through the use of racial prosthetics and language – “Ethiop words”. To what extent does the phenomenon of “racechange” show the intrinsic paradox of race, being the product of an essentialist constructivism, or a constructivist essentialism? How do adaptations and tradaptations reveal the polysemy of race through the dynamics of “racechange”? How is the meaning of race fluctuating depending on the cultural context and the language chosen for the tradaptation? What are the consequences of “racechange” in the interactions between the characters and how does it change the meaning of the play?

The Role of Philosophy in Ethics Education

One of the characteristics of the development of the movement of philosophy for children has been the variety of perspectives and practices that have grown from it over the decade. The aim of this symposium is to tackle this diversity of perspectives and practices in philosophy for children in its relationship to ethics education. In sum, how these different perspectives permit or limit ethics education of children and teenagers? The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) calls for papers that explore how various theoretical and practical perspective on the practice of philosophy in schools fosters students’ ethics learning. We invite to submit papers using a philosophical, theoretical or empirical lens. Accepted papers will be presented at the IAPC special symposium of the 2023 American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division Annual Meeting.

The Power of Law in Europe

Series of lectures by Perry Anderson

Few attributes are more important to the European Union than that of Rechtsstaat. The connotations of the term are both internal and external: it can refer either to the supremacy of law within its own borders, or to its respect for international law beyond them. Historically, the “law of nations”, as it was originally called, predates the jurisprudence of the Union, a relatively recent creation, by many centuries. At its centre lay a concern with the regulation of armed conflicts between peoples and States: relationships of power traditionally settled by war. What is the bearing of these on a contemporary political system priding itself on its commitment to peace? This series of lectures will look, in turn, at the origins and evolution of the law of nations in Europe; at the origins and nature of law within a Union that defines itself as neither national nor international; at the kinds and results of the ensuing statecraft and democratic will-formation; and in conclusion, at the historical juncture of the Union at the time of war in Ukraine.
