  Appreciating Plurilingual Competencies: Current and Future Perspectives

  Vers une valorisation des compétences plurilingues : perspectives et actions

  The Masaryk University Language Centre cordially invites you to the second conference dedicated to plurilingualism. The first one, Teaching and Learning Languages in the Shadow of Lingua Franca, was held in Brno in 2019. This time, the MU Language Centre is happy to co-organise the event with the Free University of Brussels and the University of Fribourg.The aim of this colloquium is to encourage reflection on plurilingual skills by adopting an interdisciplinary and practical approach. Language teachers working in higher education, as well as researchers from different cultural and geographical backgrounds, are invited to this conference to present and share their good practices, to explore and develop new perspectives and to stimulate an in-depth reflection on the issues at the heart of plurilingualism.

  Rethinking Liberal Europe

  Ideas of Europe and Notions of Freedom between 1848 and 1945

  The aim of this conference is to shed new light on the ways in which concepts of freedom and ideas of Europe have interreacted between 1848 and 1945. While recent research into the history of European ideas for this period has focused on anti-liberal thinking, we emphasise that in the era of nationalism the idea of a Europe founded on freedom played an important role in the political and cultural debates. In doing so, we also want to rethink the link between Europe and liberal democracy in general as well as analyse its political implications for current debates. Scholars interested in participating are invited to consider their research with regards to how ideas of and discourses about freedom, however understood, (re)shaped notions such as “Europe”, “European”, “European civilization” etc. within historical and philosophical works, novels, works of art, treatises, speeches, propaganda material, and so on.

  From the Battle of Baghdad in 1258 to the late Syrian Civil Conflict, wars always were outstanding occurrences for urban landscape changes by making physical destructions and population change. Certainly the acceleration in urban development and reconstruction in order to catch up the period of conflict, chaos and recession affects the urban landscape. An element of importance on which we would like to focus when questioning urban landscapes in post-war cities is the commercial centre, a representative urban object of our current consumption society.

  Archaeologists use different methods for visualizing their data – for analysis and for presentation. The international spring school will discuss successful ways to visualize these data and challenges and successes in the application of both GIS and network analysis (NA).   En rassemblant pour la première fois des historiens de l’Inquisition et des spécialistes des rapports entre Rome et les Églises orientales, le colloque propose d’étudier l’attitude des différents tribunaux de la foi (inquisition romaine, espagnole, portugaise…) envers les chrétiens orientaux à l’époque moderne, tant sur le plan judiciaire (procès) que sur le plan doctrinal (censure libraire, questions théoriques, dubia circa sacramenta), avec un regard comparatif et en reliant les discussions sur l’Orient chrétien aux autres controverses formulés par les théologiens et les missionnaires aux XVII^e et XVIII^e siècles.

  Himalayan Journeys. Circulations and Transformations

  This conference goal is to foreground movement as a particular social dynamic and to consider mobility and circulatory regimes, trails, routes and roads as the “connective tissue” within various historical and political contexts and against the backdrop of rooted cultures and identities inscribed in particular landscapes. We wish to explore how these circulations relate to cultural practices, imaginaries and materialities and how they are socially transformative. What can the study of circulation tell us about the Himalayas, their social and spatial dynamics ? Does the Himalayan social fabric produce peculiar circulatory regimes and pathways ? How have relations between states and circulatory phenomena evolved ? What are the new cultural and moral geographies that emerge from this global-cum-local circulation ?

In this way, Art and Music, as resources, have been one of the key elements to be able to understand a culture since it has been the mechanism through which humans have been able to capture and transmit ideas and knowledge.

  Perspectives on Women’s Autobiographies from Africa and the Diaspora

  This international conference aims to examine the autobiographies of women from Africa (during colonial and post-colonial periods) and the Diaspora to shed light on the meaning and significance of the various messages conveyed through those texts. Although there is an abundance of autobiographical texts by these women, many remain unknown to the general public. From that angle, the conference is positioned as a real prospect to further bring those half- veiled writings to public's attention. As such, the conference intends to bring together scholars, researchers, experts and doctoral students, in human and social sciences, as well as in languages ​​and arts, affiliated to universities, research centers, NGOs and civil societies in Africa and around the world. Their objective is to present and discuss women's autobiographical writings from Africa and the Diaspora from a multidisciplinary perpective.
