Housing co-creation for tomorrow’s cities

RE-DWELL Conference 2022

Responses to different crises allow us to rethink housing conceptions and identify initiatives, policies and patterns that can make a difference for the future. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed critical failures of current housing systems and the changing nature of our understanding of housing challenges. Initiatives and collaborations with a transformative potential have emerged or have been reinforced in that context. Moreover, transformations of conceptions, of policy agendas and of professional practices have been steered since a longer time by the recognition of the affordability crisis and of climate change as major challenges for the housing sector. The conference will focus on present or past collaborative initiatives that bring together local actors, from institutions to the third and private sector, regional and central governments, technicians, residents and sometimes academia. We will discuss the potential of such multi-actor processes and of co-creation to adapt the ways we conceive, build and manage housing to present and future challenges that cities face.

L'Europe par l'image et en images

"If I had to do it again, I would start with culture": this statement often erroneously attributed to Jean Monnet suggests that in the absence of a shared culture, Europe as a political and economic construct remains nothing but a hollow shell. This conference aims to question the disillusioned position which holds that there is no meaningful common European culture, and to do so through images. One way to visualize the potential existence and limits of a European cultural base is indeed to trace the circulation of images – be they works of art, press images, posters, photographs, or even motifs and patterns – in the region, from antiquity through to the present day. What are the images that have circulated most widely in Europe? Are they specific to Europe or are they already globalized? What was their visual and symbolic impact? Is there a "visual culture" specific to Europe and, if so, what might be its distinctive "patterns"?

Medieval studies and medievalism both focus on the same object, the Middle Ages. Yet their approaches are different. Long separated, medieval studies and medievalism are now challenged to rethink their links in research, teaching and social dissemination of knowledge. The summer school aims to help young researchers to strengthen their understanding of these scientific developments, to position their research effectively, and to develop networks with international researchers. The school, in French and English, proposes lectures by world-renowned specialists, debates, meetings with professionals and practical workshops.

How platforms change food value chains?

The aim of this seminar is to explore to what extent the development of marketing platforms modifies the interactions between the actors of the agricultural sector. The scientists' view will be confronted with that of Mr. Christophe Alliot, expert at the BASIC office. In a recent report, he emphasized the inevitability and necessity of digital development, but also demonstrated that this dynamic is not without consequences for consumers' eating habits and farmers' production practices. Mixing his expertise with that of researchers and professionals will allow a comprehensive view of the impacts the development of platforms has on the scale of the value chain actors, but also on the scale of the agricultural sector as a whole.

In the first part of the discussions, the aim will be to identify, through different editions of the games, on the one hand what belongs to the “Olympic model” and, on the other hand, what has been specific to some editions or to the fields of urbanism, security, ecology and economy. In the second part, the exchanges will seek to contribute to current and future mobilizations, both local and global, by identifying a set of conceptual and practical tools that have been employed over the last few decades, putting them into perspective and questioning their applicability and relevance in the context of preparing the next Olympics.

The Bright Side of Night

Nocturnal Activities in Medieval and Early Modern Times

In most societies, the night is associated with danger, criminality, the liminal, or death, and pre-modern Europe is no exception – on the contrary, its image is embedded in the romanticized view of an age that feared the end of day. Despite abundant research on this side of darkness, there was another, less obvious attitude towards the night which has seen much less scholarly attention yet: nocturnal activities that were cherished, sought after, or thought only possible during night-time. This conference looks for such positive sides of night: The search for the relics of saints, the night-time prayers, the pursuit of astronomy or other sciences at the foot of a candlestick, or social events that took place when the labors of the day were over. In short, we ask for the bright side of night in medieval and early modern times.

The theme chosen by the organisers is “Competition and collaboration in sports history from Antiquity to Modern times”. The Materiality of Modernisms

Within the framework of intertwining multiple approaches to the material and medial dimensions through which modernisms have been – and are being – studied, the conference will also offer an opportunity to revisit through this angle three events whose 100th anniversary takes place in 2022. The publication of Joyce’s Ulysses, the organization of The Week of Modern Art in São Paulo and the premiére of the Triadisches Ballett by Oskar Schlemmer, can be in fact set as clear examples of a broader and heterogeneous «discourse of the legitimation of change» (Osborne 2013), that only much later became known as “Modernism”. Round tables with guests and experts will be dedicated to these three topics as part of the conference program.

Hot Art, Cold War: US Art and Portugal, 1945-1990

This conference examines the artistic relations between Portugal and the US in the complex climate of the Cold War and the transition from Salazar’s dictatorship to democracy. One aim of the conference is to evaluate the different means by which Portuguese artists, critics, curators and wider audiences discovered and engaged with US art. Invited scholars and critics will offer first-hand insights into the challenges of studying and writing about US art during the late Cold War period. In addition, scholars will discuss the exhibition reviews that shaped the Portuguese perceptions of US art. They will examine the impact of US artists and movements on Portuguese art practice and tease out parallels and affinities between the artists of the two countries.

The ReDMIL 2022 doctoral summer school aims at contributing to the convergence between digital, media and information literacy research by bringing together researchers from all three communities, to foster the scientific debate and explore connections between them. The summer school is an international training program that will alternate between framing presentations by senior researchers and the in-depth discussion of emerging research by participating PhD students. The goal of this summer school is to allow PhD students engaged in the field of digital literacy, media literacy or information literacy to benefit from the expertise of renowned researchers in their field, to present their own research to an audience composed of these experts, to work collectively to the enhancement of their research work with other participants, to improve their knowledge of the research undertaken by their peers.

La place que prennent la maladie chronique ou certaines situations de handicap dans la vie quotidienne et la manière dont elles semblent s’entrelacer avec l’existence, dans ses dimensions biologique, sociale et existentielle ont conduit certains chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales à parler de « vécu chronique » ou encore « chronic living » pour tenter de saisir dans leur spécificité la vie et le vécu des personnes atteintes d’une ou plusieurs maladies de longue durée et non guérissables ou dans certaines situations de handicap.Ce colloque vise à discuter l’apport de la réflexion en termes de formes de vie, et à comprendre dans quelle mesure elles constituent des cadres conceptuels et normatifs appropriés pour comprendre la condition chronique et l'aspiration à une « vie normale », une « vie comme avant », une « vie ordinaire » parfois exprimée dans ce contexte.

Alignment and Resistance in the Arts and Culture amidst Societal Claims for Change

In the covid-19 pandemic, many transformations affected various societal areas. Becoming a “total social fact” (Marcel Mauss), the virus acted as a revealer of society’s (dys)functioning. The arts and culture were often in the forefront of the pandemic and of its disruptions. Implicitly and sometimes explicitly, artists and cultural actors were then urged to “reinvent” themselves. State authorities, the media, and the public pushed them for “new ways” of doing, consuming, evaluating, or managing culture and the arts. What different claims for “reinvention” are addressed to the worlds of arts and culture, and how do they react to these demands? This two-day international conference aims to better understand the capacity and will of alignment or resistance to the various demands for transformation that the worlds of art and culture face from time to time.

On the occasion of the 100^th anniversary of The Waste Land’s first publication, the LARCA (Laboratoire de recherches sur les cultures anglophones, UMR CNRS 8225, université de Paris) is very pleased to invite T.S. Eliot scholars, and specialists of Modernism more generally, to share and discuss their (re)assessment of the reception of T. S. Eliot’s works and ideas in the various languages of Europe. We are especially, but not exclusively, interested in probing the role of translation in reception and canonization processes, that is, in the formation and reshaping of literary canons and their effect on the circulation of literary theory.

The Stuff of Tradition: Materiality and Media in Folklore Studies

In the forthcoming 11^th international conference of Young folklorists, we seek to examine the complex relationship of folklore studies with materiality by juxtaposing it with recent re-orientations to media and (re)mediation. The conference aims to explore various materialities inherent to our data and methodology – whether obvious or ambiguous – and rethink their position in our field. We invite scholars to discuss both academic and vernacular notions on the transmission of tradition and its social and material embeddedness. We also encourage methodological discussion on how folklore scholars are themselves bound by various (new) media and technologies of documentation, archiving, and presentation.

The coming meeting takes stock of the state-formation in medieval Europe debate and its changing scholarly conceptions, in order to question diplomacy as one of its building blocks. Having in the background the transformation and gradual definition of geo-politicial borders and sovereignties in Europe, two key questions arise: How demanding were external affairs on political communities and governments as they became more structured? In turn, how did the growing need for more comprehensive diplomacy impact on the development of such structures?
