Short Fiction as World Literature

In Death of a Discipline, Gayatri Spivak mentions the problematic identification of “literature” with the novel form in comparative literature (2005: 123). Her concern with our general blindness to non-hegemonic forms recalls the consternation frequently shown in short fiction criticism toward the enduring novel-centrism of literary studies. This conference aims to bring together scholars with an interest in examining this tension and the different ways in which it may extend to the field of world literature.

Second Summer School in Economic and Social History

This Summer School offers comprehensive courses on research methods and central themes in Economic and Social History, as well as a framework for paper presentations from Ph.D. students who are starting their theses and already have a chapter or paper to discuss, and post-doctoral researchers with more advanced papers, possibly in the pipeline for publication. We aim to put together researchers with different levels of experience. 5th International Congress for Young Researchers in Middle Ages

On 10, 11 and 12 November 2022, the 5^th International Congress for Young Researchers in Middle Ages (ICYRMA) will take place at the University of Évora, Portugal. ICYRMA is destinated to students at master, doctoral and postdoctoral level and/or to those who have obtained their academic degrees in the last five years. It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, ethnology, sociology, geography, methodology, among other areas. In this 5th ICYRMA, the theme will be “Time and temporality”.

International Public History Research Seminar

Every year since 2018, Wrocław’s Public History Summer School brings together undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. They attend lectures, workshops, round tables and discussions, as well as present their own public history projects. The positive feedback that we received from them, as well as their suggestions in evaluation questionnaires encourage us to extend the school’s program and launch an international research seminar. As more and more doctoral students and academic historians conduct public history projects or include public history in their ongoing research, we believe that it may become an important platform for networking and exchange of information for scholars who are at the very beginning of their career.

Italy and its former colonies: Cooperation, mobility, continuities, and criticism

The SISSCO (Società Italiana per lo Studio della Storia Contemporanea) Research Seminar “Italy and the Post-colonial world” is currently organizing its second seminar, titled “Italy and its former colonies. Cooperation, mobility, continuities, and criticism”. The seminar focuses on the timeframe ranging from 1960 – the “year of Africa” but also the one in which the formal relationship between Italy and Somalia ended – to 1989, which marked the end of the polarized system that characterized the Cold War. However, we welcome also contributions informed bya long-term perspective embracing, for instance, post-WWII events and personal trajectories. In this way, we seek to foster multidisciplinary and transnational dialogues around the theme of the relationships that Italy established with the former colonies and with people migrating from those countries.

The Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) announces the 4^th National Public History Conference at the Museum M9 for the history of Italy in the 20^th century in Mestre, from the 27^th of May 2022 to the 31^st May 2022. The 4th AIPH National Conference of Venice-Mestre will create new opportunities for discussion and reflection between those who work with the past. The conference will examine ways in which history is present in society today, from universities to public places, in schools and learning institutions, in high and in popular culture, and, finally, in the daily life of our communities. Rethinking Liberal Europe

Ideas of Europe and Notions of Freedom between 1848 and 1945

The aim of this conference is to shed new light on the ways in which concepts of freedom and ideas of Europe have interreacted between 1848 and 1945. While recent research into the history of European ideas for this period has focused on anti-liberal thinking, we emphasise that in the era of nationalism the idea of a Europe founded on freedom played an important role in the political and cultural debates. In doing so, we also want to rethink the link between Europe and liberal democracy in general as well as analyse its political implications for current debates. Scholars interested in participating are invited to consider their research with regards to how ideas of and discourses about freedom, however understood, (re)shaped notions such as “Europe”, “European”, “European civilization” etc. within historical and philosophical works, novels, works of art, treatises, speeches, propaganda material, and so on.

En rassemblant pour la première fois des historiens de l’Inquisition et des spécialistes des rapports entre Rome et les Églises orientales, le colloque propose d’étudier l’attitude des différents tribunaux de la foi (inquisition romaine, espagnole, portugaise…) envers les chrétiens orientaux à l’époque moderne, tant sur le plan judiciaire (procès) que sur le plan doctrinal (censure libraire, questions théoriques, dubia circa sacramenta), avec un regard comparatif et en reliant les discussions sur l’Orient chrétien aux autres controverses formulés par les théologiens et les missionnaires aux XVII^e et XVIII^e siècles.
