Screening Crime in the Arab World

This conference will focus on Arab crime films and TV series, by which are meant, broadly, works of fiction centering on crimes, criminals and criminal investigations (by law enforcement agencies or ordinary citizens), from the beginning of Arab cinema to the present. The aim of the conference is to study these crime dramas in their historical contexts of production and reception and to reflect on the multiple dimensions – narrative, cultural, social, legal, political, etc. – of crime and, where appropriate, of criminal investigations in Arab movies/shows.

    Maillol and after

    Orsay Rencontres

The Musée d’Orsay is devoting a retrospective to Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) which will show him in all the diversity of his work, painting, decorative art and sculpture. On the occasion of the exhibition, we are organising a symptosium which aims at reading Maillol work from a contemporaneous perspective. This will thus provide an opportunity for the contemporary re-reading that Maillol’s work calls for. Papers on the following aspects of Maillol’s work are expected: sources (artistic, literary, musical); modalities of exhibiting; friendly and intellectual circles; influence on sculptors of the 20th century and his place in the history of sculpture; view of photographersand filmmakers; critical reception; contemporary echoes.

Borders, Limits and Environment: Times, Spaces, Methods

The conference “Borders, Limits and Environment: times, spaces, methods” held in Mulhouse from 1st December to 3d December, 2022, aims at deepening the dialogue between humanities and social sciences on environmental questions by considering the theme of borders and limits. These two terms can be considered as historical or geographical objects, but also as a way to reflect upon disciplinary, methodological or didactic limits. During the conference, we wish to study, and maybe to reconnect the links between studies and academic disciplines involving time, space and the environment, especially between environmental history and geohistory of the environment.

    Dreaming Things

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Object Worlds and Dream Cultures

While the close interconnection between the universe of things (expanding in a commodity-shaped way), the dream and its reflection in arts and media may be considered a founding trope of European modernity around 1900, the extension of our focus on pre-modern contexts and transcultural constellations in the present opens up new perspectives on connections between object cultures and dream cultures.

Jewish Theatre as an Object of Anthropological Study

This study day aims to apprehend Jewish theatre (in all its forms of expression, both linguistic and aesthetic) from an anthropological perspective. Taking as a starting point the Talmudic proscription of theater and circus performances (Jerusalem Talmud, Avoda Zara, 18b) and confronting it with primary sources which attest to the presence of the theatre among the Jews, we formulate several questions. How is it possible to approach theatre within Judaism? As an anthropological object working on the construction and affirmation of a form of Jewishness apprehended according to its relation to the theatre? In other words, can theatre be conceived as a medium of the Jewish subject? Can we consider Jewish theatre independently of its links with the Bible? In what forms? What about the historical and biblical topics that are found in most writers?

L’esclavage en Afrique : savoirs et décloisonnements

Slavery in Africa: Knowledge and Openings

Research on slavery in Africa has benefited from a clear dynamism in recent years, supported, partly, by international research programmes as well as by the publication of many works of reference. The international conference to which our institutions invite researchers and teachers is intended to contribute to this assessment of knowledge about slavery in Africa and to take stock of the most recent significant scientific advances. With an approach promoting interdisciplinary scientific dialogue (history, anthropology, sociology, museology) and dialogue with civil society (through the attendance of anti-slavery associations), the ambition here is to continue efforts to break down barriers between the various regions of the African continent, their historiographies and their stakeholders.

Art and friendship in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe

From Liège to Strasbourg. New Research on the German-French Border Region During the High and Late Middle Ages (11th–16th Century)

In the High and Late Middle Ages, the border region between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire was a dynamic space not only in terms of territorial politics, but also in economic, religious, social and cultural terms, which always requires cross-border work in historical research. Despite this elementary precondition, there is currently a lack of cross-national and cross-language exchange, especially for young academics. In order to meet this need, we would like to invite MA graduates and young researchers to present their current research projects to a professional audience and to discuss them within the setting of a young researchers’ conference.

Creating a memory of ancient pasts

Choices, constructions and transmissions from the 9th to the 18th Century

Our objective is to analyze the methods of the creation of a memory of the ancient pasts, according to a chronology which starts from the 9th Century, which was a period when creative activity was intense, ancient texts were rediscovered by Western Europe, but also when written memory increased, until the 18th Century, when Antiquity was particularly mobilized, as much in the arts, with the emergence of archeology and neoclassicism, as in political speeches. Through the collected papers, the workshops aim to question the constants as well as the mutations of the strategies that authors and artists displayed in order to elaborate this (these) memory(-ies) of ancient pasts, since they selected and organised elements of the past to the detriment of others, which implies a range of recompositions.

    The Antiquity and its receptions

The Summerschool “The Antiquity and its receptions” is  open to doctoral and advanced MA students, specializing in history, art history, archaeology, philology, or any other discipline linked with the theme of the reception of Antiquity. It is international in nature and aims to establish a multilingual dialogue (French, Italian and English) between the different methodologies in use in Europe, North America and elsewhere, and thus to promote interdisciplinarity. At the same time, it plans to test these methodologies in the field, in collaboration with heritage institutions such as museums, archaeological sites, archives and libraries in Rome and Tivoli.
