How New Migration Governance Changed the World in the Long 1970s

The conference “The Global Migration Turn: How New Migration Governance Changed the World in the Long 1970s” examines the radical transformation in mobility and migration patterns and policies that occurred between the late 1960s and early 1980s. It focuses on the shift from active immigration policies to more restrictive stances in North America and Western Europe and explores the causes and consequences. Themes include changing immigration policies, refugee issues, and the role of international organisations. By bringing together scholars across disciplines, the conference aims to bring fresh, ground-breaking perspectives to the study of postwar global history. We aim to decipher the transformations that took place during the extensive period of the 1970s, which shaped migration as a globally prominent issue, particularly between an expanding West and the rest of the world.

A basic tension inherent in any idea of Europe is that it links some set of “cultural values” to a geographical space on the western fringe of the Asian landmass, but at the same time allows for a significant degree of internal diversity. There is ample evidence for the force of visions of centre and periphery in this context. The variety of ways in which such mental maps have served to underpin notions of difference and belonging in the light of Europeanness are at the core of this conference.

The Many Faces of Paul

Pauline Exegesis in Pre-modern Times

The conference on the Many Faces of Paul is the opening workshop of the research project “Exegesis of Paul in the 16th Century”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Other than the project itself which will mainly focus on Reformation theology, our interest for this conference is to focus on other intellectual traditions, be they late antique, medieval, or early modern, that will help us later to contextualize Protestant perspectives. We are therefore deliberately interested in presentations on a broad spectrum of possible figures and sources, and we welcome contributions on the whole corpus that was historically associated with the Apostle, including the Epistle to the Hebrews and apocryphal material such as the Acta Pauli.

Listing the World Before the Age of Print

International Medieval Congress 2024

Lists help us make sense of the world around us, keep track of the order of things and sometimes create a whole new order altogether. Lists were just as central to the lives and experiences of medieval people. If anything, the practice of enumeration was even more common in the Middle Ages, when lists fulfilled functions which are now served by other tools sitting at the intersection of written and visual culture, such as maps and databases. This call for paper concerns a series of panels that will be held at the next International Medieval Congress, on lists and list-making. It will investigate more precisely the agency of lists as both material objects and cultural artefacts – in their ability to create new relationships, not just transcribing existing ones, and formulate new knowledge rather than simply compile it.

L’époque moderne est une période d’activité diplomatique florissante sur le continent européen, caractérisée par la diffusion de la représentation diplomatique permanente et l’apparition des congrès de paix. Les pratiques linguistiques évoluent également de manière spectaculaire, le latin, l’allemand et l’italien étant progressivement éclipsés par le français en tant que moyen de communication diplomatique paneuropéen. Tous ces développements ont eu un impact considérable sur la traduction en diplomatie, affectant son fonctionnement et son rôle de diverses manières. Nous souhaitons adopter un point de vue transnational et interdisciplinaire et examiner le sujet sur la base de nouvelles sources primaires dans le contexte général du développement de la traduction et de l’évolution de la diplomatie au début de la période moderne.

Giving research feedback to children: beyond ready-made recipes and asymmetric relationships

Bringing together social scientists who do fieldwork with children or young people and wish to renew the methodology and the sense of their feedback of research results, we aim at working in a collaborative and innovative way by cross-cutting fields and disciplines. Methodological publications usually include ready-made tools. While they make it possible to avoid the worst, they often do not consider the overall social and cultural context in which children live; they may also be adults-centered and based on stereotypical representations of childhood. During a day and a half, participants will exchange in order to help each other to elaborate a visual or performance-based feedback of their research grounded in the daily life of children and youth, their communication codes and potential expectations.

But where do these categories come from, what is their history, how do they differ from country to country and how do they evolve? Shifting Categories of Work asks these questions, highlighting the many ways in which our societies categorise work.

Critical Approaches in Romani Studies and Beyond

The conference Racism, Justice, Environment : Critical Approaches in Romani Studies and Beyond is dedicated to the topic of environmental justice. People in Eastern Europe have higher chances of dying as a result of pollution than those in Western Europe. The highest rates of pollution-related deaths are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Romania, all countries with significant Roma communities. Across Europe, numerous Roma communities live in environmentally hazardous areas. Critical Romani Studies therfore proposes a paradigm shift and challenges the dominant academic and policy discourses and suggests inquiries into forms of oppressions Roma are facing, highlighting the importance of structural forms of injustice.

Digital humanities, developing digital science methodologies in the study of humanities and using the critical approaches of humanities in the analysis of the contemporary “digital revolutions,” are constantly in search of new tools to explore more and more complex and diversified data sets. The ambition of this seminar is to be one of the places where this coupling is shaped, fostered and analyzed. The fifth conference of the European Labour History Network (ELHN) will explore how mining mobility and knowledge circulation have played a pivotal role in extractive industries worldwide. The movement of workers, technologies, and knowledge has been mediated by state authorities, corporations, and subcontractors through alluring and forced forms of recruitment. Alongside these trajectories, men and women from neighbouring and distant territories moved to newly reopened mines to search for new deposits and improve their social and economic conditions.
