Science, Technology and Nationalism in India

Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

Patterns of Miscommunication in Contemporary East-Central European Cinema

We would like to invite scholars from the fields of film, media and communication studies, but also of linguistics, literary studies, political studies, anthropology, etc., to a joint reflection on East-Central European contemporary cinema. Much of East-Central European cinema after 1989 seems to thematize the issue of communicational barriers. If we posit, with Casetti, that films are sites of production and circulation of discourses, which can be interpreted as symbolic constructions referring to a cluster of meanings conveyed by a specific society at a moment of its existence, then what are the meanings transmitted by this cinematic reflection on communication blockage? What are the main cinematic discourses developed around miscommunication issues? To what extent do they create a common imaginary for this part of Europe?

WeChat Ethnography: New Practices and Limits of an Emerging Research Methods

As more and more social practices take place online, scholars have also changed their ways to conduct research, disrupting the traditional methods of social sciences. This workshop encourages researchers in social sciences and Chinese studies to share their “Wechatethnography” experiences and to open discussion related to online research methods, grasping the new opportunities as well as the limits and difficulties it provokes, bearing in mind that doing good ethnographic research consists of “finding practical anddefensible balancing points between opposing tensions”, and making accounts that are “properly responsible and accountable to their audience and their informants”.

This panel focuses on political practices and symbolic resources structuring economic and financial transactions among actors of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) politics. In particular, the panel questions the BRI political-socio-economic context which contributed to the emergence of transnational think tanks, media, social agents, and civil society organizations that are now daily reporting, commenting, and criticizing the Chinese public interventions in agro-industries, natural resources, and environmental policies in the global South, especially in African countries.

    Public Policy in Africa

    A Political Economy Perspective

African scholars’ contributions to public policy theoretical debates and research have remained little or quasi-invisible, especially at the global level of international journals’ databases. There is also little evidence of African terrain. This panel would like to contribute to filling this gap, thereby asking why such gaps, and looking at policy implications. The panel seeks to systematically question, understand and explain the economic divides in producing public policy research and publications at the international level. This panel is an interdisciplinary venue. It is open to contributions from different political and social sciences fields using public policy as an area of research in Africa: economics, anthropology, political sociology, public administration, political economy, international relations, etc.

The Art Museum in the Digital Age

The Belvedere Research Center is continuing its conference series on the digital transformation of art museums with its fifth event on the topic. While the 2022 conference challenged binary concepts such as analog/ digital, this year’s event critically examines the imagined cultural metaverse. In four thematic online sessions and an on-site workshop, the lectures deal with the immersive experiences of virtuality and reality, cultural heritage data, value discourse surrounding the metaverse and NFTs, and self-perception and the social role of museums.

Notre intérêt académique est de rassembler des spécialistes de périodes et d’aires culturelles variées, à travers une approche comparative qui ne se limite pas à l’étude des sociétés du passé mais bénéficie également des apports de l’anthropologie culturelle.

Limits of Europeanness? Contested Notions of Difference and Belonging (16th-21st Centuries)

Fourteenth Annual Conference of the Research Network on the History of the Idea of Europe

A basic tension inherent in any idea of Europe is that it links some set of “cultural values” to a geographical space on the western fringe of the Asian landmass, but at the same time allows for a significant degree of internal diversity, the boundaries of which are constantly shifting and disputed. There is ample evidence for the continuing force of visions of centre and periphery in this context, both on the territorial and metaphorical level. The variety of ways in which such topographies of cultural values have served to underpin notions of difference and belonging in the light of Europeanness are at the core of this conference. In exploring this multi-faceted field of research, we aim to bring together several disciplines ranging from history, intellectual history and art history over cultural and literary studies to musicology and anthropology.

    Appel à contribution - Langage

The First National Conference on Language, Literature, and Culture (NCLLC)

Todd (1987) defined literature as "language at full stretch". Stretch, here, refers to all the different practices of language by its users, and the common or even rare stylistic features of those users. Thus, a deep understanding of literature, especially the specific usages by writers and poets requires the mastery of the sentence’s internal mechanisms and beyond.
