  Labour, Science, and Knowledge circulation in Mining (15th-21st century)

  The fifth conference of the European Labour History Network (ELHN) will explore how mining mobility and knowledge circulation have played a pivotal role in extractive industries worldwide. The movement of workers, technologies, and knowledge has been mediated by state authorities, corporations, and subcontractors through alluring and forced forms of recruitment. Alongside these trajectories, men and women from neighbouring and distant territories moved to newly reopened mines to search for new deposits and improve their social and economic conditions.

  Crossing the divide: Exploring Mediterranean places across Mediterranean, European and Middle Eastern Anthropology

  Tenth MedNet workshop

  Mediterranean Anthropology, European Anthropology and Middle Eastern Anthropology study overlapping areas of the Mediterranean region. Reflecting geopolitical divisions of the area, the three regional traditions have over the years developed their own theoretical concerns, ethnographic concerns,and political-ethical agendas. The 2023 MedNet workshop seeks to cross the traditional disciplinary division between the Southern, Eastern and Northern shores in order to foster productive intellectual crossings and ethnographic cross-pollination. We ask: how can we advance anthropology in and of the Mediterranean by bringing different regional traditions into closer conversation?

  New Approaches to Sculpture

  10th Symposium for Young Researchers in Sculpture

  Considered more challenging than painting or transversal themes of study, sculpture has nevertheless undergone a revival within the realm of research (notably monographic studies), often thanks to the dynamism of museums. For the past decade, the Musée Rodin has sought to encourage young researchers to explore modern-era sculpture (particularly from the 19^th and the first half of the 20^th centuries), in collaboration with professors specialised in this realm of research. To this end, the museum hosts an annual symposium, allowing PhD students, young doctorate holders and young curators to contrast and compare their subjects and perspectives.

  Magnats, entremetteurs et contrebandiers : les distributeurs de films et leurs réseaux au XXe siècle

  This workshop aims at revisiting the history of film importers/exporters and distributors throughout the 20^th century by examining the social inscription of their trade. Moguls, go-betweens and/or smugglers, film traders were main actors in determining the value of films, building film markets, bringing out audiences by giving them (or not) access to the films. Yet, the history of cinema has long ignored the figure of the distributor, too bland to obscure the ethereal figure of the author, too close to the limelight to interest those, less numerous, researching “those wonderful people out there in the dark,” the audience.

  Celebrating the 220th anniversary of the birth of a Victorian iconoclast

  “Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881): His Lives and Afterlives” is the interdisciplinary subject chosen to celebrate the 220^th anniversary of the birth of a Victorian iconoclast. The Victorian Conservative Prime Minister is still perceived today as an extraordinary politician who transformed himself, his party and the UK over a long period of time from the 1830’s to his death in 1881. The conference will aim to undercover a number of still unexplored sides of Disraeli and bring him up to date. Both his political and literary talents will be taken into account as well as the long-lasting impact of his heritage (whether mythologised or not).

  The European space. Geo-economic balances and State powers in the long run

  In the construction of the European space(s) a crucial role has been played by economic actors and relations, which often overpass national borders and intertwin with the nature and roles of political powers and national States. Even well before the last globalization (or re-globalization), traditional government systems were pressed by the internationalization of economies: by centrifugal pushes, the need for external resources, or the emergence of new actors on the international stage in economic, technical, and social fields, that have increasingly influenced both the private and the public life. In more recent times, then, a new institutional framework developed at the supranational, European, level getting new functions and involving actors, such as trade unions, charities, business interests, scientific institutions, and churches, reinforcing the dynamics of cooperation, integration, and convergence beyond national borders.

  In this seminar, Dr Iolanda Bianchi will present her recent work on the democratisation of local public services by way of the paradigm of the common. The presentation will focus on two urban contexts, Naples and Barcelona, and examines the common-inspired transformation of their local public services, respectively, water services (Acqua Bene Comune A.S.) and sociocultural facilities (Citizens Asset Programme). The seminar will reflect on the capacity of public-common institutions to represent an alternative and more democratic management modality for local public services.

  Digital Labor in the Wake of Pandemic Times

  The last few years have been marked by a global economic crisis, strains on both institutions and labor markets, and unprecedented disruptions in the mobility of goods and people. Covid-19 has profoundly affected the way we work, causing an increase in people turning to digital labor platforms to deal with the uncertainties of an unstable economy. Even in the formal sector, remote work and automation have led to dramatic changes in the workplace. In navigating this new reality, it is crucial to examine how these changes are impacting workers, businesses, and society as a whole. By bringing together researchers, workers, policymakers, and practitioners, the INDL-6 conference “Digital Labor in the wake of Pandemic Times” addresses the latest developments and challenges in the fields of technology-mediated labor, platformization, and automation.

  Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

  Patterns of Miscommunication in Contemporary East-Central European Cinema

  We would like to invite scholars from the fields of film, media and communication studies, but also of linguistics, literary studies, political studies, anthropology, etc., to a joint reflection on East-Central European contemporary cinema. Much of East-Central European cinema after 1989 seems to thematize the issue of communicational barriers. If we posit, with Casetti, that films are sites of production and circulation of discourses, which can be interpreted as symbolic constructions referring to a cluster of meanings conveyed by a specific society at a moment of its existence, then what are the meanings transmitted by this cinematic reflection on communication blockage? What are the main cinematic discourses developed around miscommunication issues? To what extent do they create a common imaginary for this part of Europe?

  Le colloque international interdisciplinaire « Paysages et sanctuaires. La redécouverte des sanctuaires dans le bassin égéen et en Italie méridionale » s’adresse aux chercheurs travaillant sur la redécouverte des sanctuaires antiques, sur les rapports entre paysages et lieux de culte, ainsi que sur l’archéologie, l’histoire et à l’anthropologie des religions antiques. L’espace d’étude est limité à l’Italie méridionale et la Sicile d’une part, la Grèce continentale et le bassin égéen d’autre part.
