The First National Conference on Language, Literature, and Culture (NCLLC)

Todd (1987) defined literature as "language at full stretch". Stretch, here, refers to all the different practices of language by its users, and the common or even rare stylistic features of those users. Thus, a deep understanding of literature, especially the specific usages by writers and poets requires the mastery of the sentence’s internal mechanisms and beyond.

Beyond Russia’s Two Capitals: Regional Art Exhibitions in the Russian Empire

Art life in the regions of the Russian Empire has often been sidelined in the larger picture of art history, and this conference aims to bring this vital material to wider attention and stimulate discussion. If the 1905 relaxing of censorship vastly increased the number of exhibitions, local societies and individuals had already established regular and highly significant exhibitions all over the Empire. We invite colleagues to illuminate and discuss exhibitions that were held in the different regions, to consider their specific features and become part of this huge — and inevitably collaborative — project. We particularly welcome papers that address exhibitions before 1905.

Kinship, Neighborhoods and Communities in The Maghreb: Or How to Rethink the Bond between the Local and the Global?

Nowadays, it seems somewhat anachronistic to speak of bonds of kinship or neighborly relationships, networks of solidarity, mutual aid and support that they can entail in a (post)modernity that is increasingly characterized by the shift and transfer of the social and economic functions once attributed to the family, to public authorities. While matters of belonging and identities seem to be increasingly affected by quite virtual and proximate factors whereby spheres would be considered as being increasingly more seamless and permeable. Nonetheless, recent socio-anthropological studies have perversely revealed that patterns of kinship, family bonds, community or neighborhood ties seem to remain a remarkably significant part of the lived experiences of humans, albeit continuing to control the relationships among people and between people and their environment. The main goal of this symposium is to raise questions about the relevance of kinship, neighborhood and community as a source of meaning, identity and socio-economic solidarity.

    Polarized Societies? Challenges for Sociology

    XII Portuguese Congress of Sociology

The challenges that polarization brings to sociology now extend to crucial domains of social processes and action, reaching, among others, the arenas of consumption, religions, identities, sexuality, childhood, culture, and science. In this context, the digitization of society and the economy creates and emphasizes dynamics of polarization, while simultaneously opening up new possibilities. Beyond the general impact on social interactions and practices, to what extent are the new social media a factor that promotes expressions of polarization?

    Seminar - Soziologie

Toward an integrative cognitive science of social inequalities

The goal of this seminar series is to discuss research coming out of the fields of cognitive science and sociology, with the hope of articulating the social and cognitive dimensions of inequalities. Are there bridges between these two fields? What are the challenges for interdisciplinary research? Although the differences between the fields of cognitive science and sociology cannot be denied, the goal of this seminar is to facilitate scientific exchange among communities of researchers interested in questions that relate to social inequality.

Serving the Sultan: Religious Diversity in Gujarat Under Islamic Rule

The Serving the Sultan conference will re-visit and cross-examine the processes that forged and shaped this religiously multi-layered, and ethnically plural society during the Islamic period in Gujarat (1298 - 1756 AD). This will be achieved by focusing on religious minorities, either in the numerical sense (Jains/Parsis), or minorities in the sense of not sharing the religion of power (various Hindu traditions). These communities’ intellectual, artistic, and literary contributions at the Islamic courts, their relation with the Islamic rulers, their everyday lives, and their mutual interactions will emerge as the common thread throughout this conference. Moreover, this colloquium seeks to explore how these local actors are embedded in trans-regional socio-political and cultural processes, thus connecting the developments in Gujarat with the broader South-Asian context.

From Archival Pasts Towards Archival Futures

    Epistemologies, Decolonization and (Dis-)Placement

Exploring the archival legacies of colonialism from different disciplinary angles, the workshop questions the complex ways in which archives connect present-day societies to the past and the future. It does so in relation to three major themes: the material and epistemological legacies of colonialism in archival contexts, the specific roles of archives and archival practices in current demands for the decolonization of scholarship and memory and the issue of archival (dis)placement. Altogether, the workshop strives to raise fundamental questions about the relationship between our understanding, ownership and location of (colonial) archives on the one hand and the making of history on the other.

    Seminar - Epistemologie und Methoden

    Channels of Digital Scholarship

The general aim of the seminar/discussion, is an exchange of information about the different offerings of our various institutions in the field of digital humanities/scholarship training. Particular matters of interest that have been identified are: the curriculum of each course, how it evolved, and why; if there is a particular emphasis for each course (practical, theoretical, &c.); the make-up and background of the student body for each course, and how students are selected; what the prospects and possibilities might be for students going on from the course, in the sense of career directions, and whether trends might be emergent about where they want or are tending to go, once they have finished their course.

    Mapping “Post-Conflict” Cities

Building on the knowledge gathered from academic literature as well as from the first UrbanMetaMapping conference “Cartographies of Catastrophes” in Bamberg (2021) this conference will examine mapping of “post-conflict” cities from the 19th century until the present day in different geographic settings. Firstly, we want to focus particularly on the question of continuities and ruptures relating to urban planning in those cases when end of conflict coincided with a change of socio-political regime. Secondly, we want to move away from the iconic cities, capitals in particular, and focus instead on less known case studies. We are therefore particularly interested in mapping of “peripheral” cities and their experience of “post-conflict” periods.
