    Decolonizing geography and environmental studies?

Over the last two decades the decolonial turn has swept across academic disciplines, exposing the configurations of power that have survived the formal end of colonial rule. Decolonial perspectives call into question prevalent modes of producing scientific knowledge, critically addressing theoretical approaches, methodologies, fieldwork practices and citational politics. Yet, as calls to decolonizing the university have circulated widely, significant questions have been raised about the incorporation and watering down of this notion in institutional contexts. The international conference will consider the implications of the decolonial turn for the fields of geography and environmental studies.

    Catholic Abolitionisms

The conference Catholic Abolitionisms is dedicated to the central question is whether or not, and to what extent, Catholicism inspired abolitionist ideas and movements in the Atlantic world during the early modern era. We use “abolitionisms” in the plural to include instances that may not be connected because of their chronological or geographical distance and to suggest a comparative dimension.

The 2022 international Meetings on Music Mediations

This international forum aims to propose a transnational overview of the current state of research on music mediation and to share the various outlooks on these practices. In addition to its theoretical impact that aims to systematize the observations, this forum will offer multiple opportunities for meetings between practitioners and for networking between practice and research communities. This will be as much about highlighting the professional knowledge of actors in the chain of mediation professions as about giving visibility to the most recent research findings in the field.

The Art Museum in the Digital Age

The Belvedere Research Center continues its conference series on digital transformation of art museums with its fifth anniversary event on this crucial subject. The focus of this event is on the metaverse, an embodied virtual-reality experience, and its connection to cultural institutions. The aim of our forthcoming conference is to give an initial impetus for critical examination of the metaverse in the cultural field. We seek to stimulate discussion about the position of cultural institutions in the metaverse. What should an art museum in the metaverse look like? What role should it play?

“Émigré Europe”: Civil Engagement Transfers between Eastern and Western Europe, 1933-1989

Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War

“Émigré Europe” seeks to explore the means and methods through which Central and Eastern European migrants were able to engage new or existing civil society structures within their host countries to set or express their own agendas and interact with their host societies on a range of levels, from local grassroots initiatives up to institutional European organizations and decision-making bodies. The conference invites scholars from different backgrounds to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion on the future potential of the research model for a wide-ranging study of European migration. We encourage contributors to think broadly about the porous geographical, temporal and political boundaries of European migration during and also immediately after the Cold War.

    Hegemons, warlords, and refugees

The 13th international conference on Baltic and Nordic studies

What is the legacy of the hegemonic pursuits of warlords that were drafted from among the Viking raiders, the German knights, the Scandinavian and Polish kings, and the Russian tsars and leaders on Baltic Sea Region and Scandinavia? In what ways was the region redesigned on the political, ideological, geographical, and cultural levels? Whether hegemony is defined in terms of political assertion or influence, especially by one country over other nations, masculinity, international leadership, regional hegemony, ideological hegemony, or hegemonic contestation, the term always connotes control, hierarchy, and dependency. What traces of their attempts have been left in culture, art, and public monuments throughout the course of time, and how are they considered in modern times ?

Ageing and Care in the Middle Ages

We welcome papers that deal with questions related to ageing and care during the Medieval period. Our goal is to analyze various forms of care and healing in regards to ageing or age-related conditions that took place within and beyond the domestic sphere. To do this, we will take into account the ways in which (health)care was conditioned by gender, race, ethnicity, class, and ability at the intersection of individual and collective experiences. We will thus consider the intersubjective nature of ageing and the new relational identities created in later life.

Careers in politics, politics as a career

Developments in 19th and early 20th century Europe

During the nineteenth century, the field of European politics witnessed a host of significant changes, prominent among them being the increasing tendency towards its professionalization. Against the backdrop of major social and cultural shifts, politics ceased to be exclusively regarded as the traditional elite’s ‘duty of honor’ and opened its doors, first to the middle class and then, with the extension of the franchise, to lower social and professional strata. The aim of our workshop is to follow how politics became not only a stand-alone profession, but also part and parcel of careers in other professional fields during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are interested in the factors underlying this process, in how it manifested in different European spaces and under different historical conditions, as well as in its outcomes and societal impact.

Indigenous art today: critical perspectives and crossing viewpoints

The notion of indigenous art today is more controversial than ever. Even though it constitutes a vindication and legitimization tool for the native peoples, its demand continues to reproduce a nineteenth-century distinction between Indigenous and civilized, primitive and modern, Western and the no-Western. Such distinctions provided the grounds on which several academic disciplines were formed, and based on their differences, they also forged diverging theoretical, methodological, and practical paths. Today, the multiple narratives on art aspire to coexist rather than compete, from the logic that fosters multivocality and plurality of discourses whatever their origins or inclinations are. We welcome all those who wish to participate to reflect on the possibilities for encounter and dialogue in the study of aesthetic manifestations and forms of expression that have not necessarily been perceived as “artistic” and that, until now, have been mainly the object of interest of the anthropological and archaeological disciplines.

    Betting on the farm

    Institutional change in Japanese agriculture

Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), a nationwide network of farm cooperatives, is under increasing pressure to expand farmer incomes by adapting coop strategies to changing market incentives. Some coops have adapted more successfully than others. In Betting on the Farm, Patricia L. Maclachlan and Kay Shimizu attribute these differences to three sets of local variables: resource endowments and product-specific market conditions, coop leadership, and the organization of farmer-members behind new coop strategies.

Insecurity in the Age of Labour Formalisation: Informal Work in Europe

    1870–1970

Free wage labour is commonly presented as the focus, if not the very core, of the history of labour in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The conference aims to challenge this narrative by focusing on multiple forms and fields of informal work. The conference will explore the insecurity of informal work. It will ask how widespread in Europe was the unregulated employment that can be described as insecure in the very century generally regarded as the era of increasingly formalised labour, and will consider which factors were thereby decisive. Thus, the focus will not be on the hard-won rise and safeguarding of free-wage labour, already so frequently examined in labour history. Rather, the spotlight will be on how the insecurity associated with informal work was not only tacitly but also quite openly accepted, or even actively promoted. The conference will also investigate the social and political conflicts that accompanied this recurrent phenomenon.

    Naturalism in Painting 1870–1905

Conference of the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Perceived as the dominant artistic trend of the last third of the 19th century, yet, still difficult to delineate, Naturalism raises a number of conceptual issues. Naturalism, perhaps the most significant trend in European painting in the 1880s and 1890s, was present simultaneously in other European countries only a few years after its emergence in France, and appeared in equal quality from Scotland to Russia and Spain to Hungary. In order to better understand the current of Naturalism, the research group “Realism and Naturalism in Hungary and in Europe based at the Hungarian National Gallery is organizing a 2-day international conference.

Montesquieu, un philosophe pour la jeune République américaine ?

The conference will focus on showing how the Founding fathers used Montesquieu’s theories. Obviously, the Founders of the American Republic were not scholars, but first and foremost, political actors of their time. They did not read Montesquieu for the sole pleasure of it, but above all to find answers to some pressing and daunting issues: Was it possible to adopt a republican government for a territory so extended? Was the representative government the good remedy to such a problem? How to distribute power in order for despotism to be avoided? Was federalism the unique way to preserve a republican form of government in modern times? Those difficulties would appear as pertaining per se to the realm of political philosophy. Nevertheless, what may be unique in the case of the early American Republic, is the fact that solving those issues was a matter of life and death for the young body politic.
