    Understanding Gradients of Political Engagements

Citizenship and Identity in South Asia

Historian and political scientists of South Asia have been dealing with the ascent of postcolonial state and the form of citizenships in South Asia. The meteoric rise of postcolonial theory, subaltern school of historiography to be precise made efforts in bringing the role of ideas and culture in shaping state, community and political narratives. Notwithstanding these insights still this literature failed to bring in one very important thing; a comparative lens to study informal politics in the region. The social transformation and process of democratization has appeared to be inching ahead across the region from Nepal to Bangladesh. Therefore, increasingly a cross country perspective is required combining interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies (qualitative, quantitative) to develop a comparative perspective of way social and cultural factors influence informal politics in South Asia.

European Central Banking and German Occupation in World War II

With the occupation of ever larger parts of Europe, National Socialist Germany extended its system of monetary policy and currency control to a growing number of countries. The occupied countries were forced to finance their own exploitation for the benefit of the National Socialist war economy with the aim to support the German war effort and to mitigate the consequences of war on German society. This conference aims at discussing the state of research and its prospects regarding the actors, objectives, and methods of Reichsbank monetary policy control in occupied Europe, the limits of this policy, the role of the central banks in the occupied countries, and the resistance to this form of monetary and fiscal occupation. Only a comparative view allows for a better understanding of the Nazi exploitation strategies in Europe.

Dialogues in Antiquity: Archetypes for a Contemporary World

Xth Conference on Classical Philology in honorem Giselle von der Walde

The expressive wealth of dialogue presents itself in numerous artistic and intellectual ways. The encounters between emotional and aesthetic resources, pedagogical and didactic purposes, as well as between claims of objectivity and scientific rigor, are fertile ground for the transdisciplinary inquiry characteristic of classical studies. This invites a diversity and multiplicity of perspectives for contributions in relation to ancient authors and their works. Investigating the history of dialogue since Antiquity also allows us to consider it as an archetype for the exchange of opinions and ideas. This is suitable for dealing with current problems that increasingly require the willingness to negotiate and rethink ideas and convictions, empathize with the feelings of others, and build agreements based on the examination of opposing arguments and points of view.

Travelling Matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean

The workshop “Travelling matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean” intends to tackle objects as sources and subjects of the history of cross-cultural encounters in innovative ways. We intend to discuss a most diverse array of objects flowing in all directions and to concentrate on the “second-handedness” of displaced objects: how and why moving objects acquire new functions and new meanings, and with what consequences for the relations between the communities involved? These perspectives demand a broad chronology, extending from antiquity to the present-day, and for the intersection between different time frames, from the relatively narrow scale of individual objects being displaced across the Mediterranean to the much larger one of the histories of their reinterpretation and repurposing.

    Contemporary ‘spiritual’ practices

Ethnographic and comparative approaches of a transnational field

Situated at the crossroads of therapy, science and politics, the field of “contemporary spiritualities” challenges analytical frameworks as demonstrated by the debates around its designation itself (New Age, Self Religion, Western Esotericism, etc.) and the eclectic practices it covers, from neo-paganism to eco-spirituality, from neo-traditional movements to alternative medicine. This panel will be focused on the circulation of contemporary spiritual practices and on their interconnections through transnational movements. It will emphasize ethnographic studies and historical perspectives essential to the understanding of the global deployment of spiritual practices.

    The Making of the 1990s

The Genesis of Post-Soviet Society through Its Material Culture

This interdisciplinary colloquium explores the social dynamics of the 1990s through the period’s changing material culture. Everyday “stuff” was transformed by the disappearance of the Soviet system, the irruption of the market, and the opening to the world. The aim is to investigate the long disintegration of the Soviet system by looking at how populations which are caught in a state of uncertainty react with material inventiveness in order to adapt.

    Bourdieu, Work and Inequalities

What can Pierre Bourdieu teach us about work and inequalities? On the 20th anniversary of his death, this conference will gather social scientists from all around the world to discuss how his legacy can shed light on workplace and labour market processes and how these feed into inequalities. While Bourdieu is widely perceived as a sociologist of social class, education, and culture, many recent works prove that it is possible and fruitful to analyse work and employment in Bourdieusian terms. At a time of rising economic inequality, we revisit Bourdieu to reflect on how his concepts can be deployed, elaborated, and refined in research on work and inequality.

On public policies, lives, and social spaces

    Anthropological perspectives from the Mediterranean

This panel encourages an anthropological perspective on public policies, considering them as spaces of negotiation, inclusion, and hope, as well as social actants resulting in violence and exclusion. Moreover, by looking at the Mediterranean it allows a narrow and novel comparative perspective.

Politics of pasts and futures in (post-)imperial contexts

The conference aims to explore how references to past empires and imperiality have shaped perceptions of history and imagined futures, both in imperial and in post-imperial contexts. These include, for example, not only references to imperial foundation myths, but also stories of success and resilience during times of crisis, and uses of imperial symbolism and history to express civic, national and/or imperial identity. It also explores legacies of pre-existing empires in post-imperial political orders.

African Governmentality, Territoriality and Statolity in Crisis

If the reflections on the State have covered quite vast fields, in particular the nature, the legitimacy, the practices, the viability, the credibility of the State in Africa, they do not yet offer the keys to put an end to this creational phenomenon nor stem the entropic dynamics by fissiparity and fission, with at the base, the activation of the principle of the self-determination of peoples to dispose of themselves.

    Climate and ocean literacy

Helping people to care ethically within planetary boundaries

The 2020 EGU Declaration of the Significance of Geoscience highlights the need for massive and widespread action to help people around the world to become literate about the changes affecting their and their offsprings’ and communities’ lives. The more people are literate about these changes, the more they can make informed decisions, adapt and mitigate. Previous General Assemblies have addressed climate change literacy (CL). Ocean literacy (OL) has developed strongly in recent years, especially with impetus from the UN Ocean Decade. Ocean-climate literacy (OCL) is an imperative that needs to be addressed massively and urgently, both within and beyond the EGU. We invite colleagues to submit contributions on any aspects of OCL; this can, of course, include CL (without the ocean) and OL (without the climate).

Digital Justice and criminal proceedings in France and the United Kingdom

The impact of new technologies on fundamental rights in light of domestic and European laws

Since the beginning of the pandemic and even shortly before, digital justice has been deployed on a large scale on both sides of the channel. If the advantages are real in many ways, the impact on fundamental rights should be questioned as far as the European cooperation is concerned with a special focus on France, England and Wales and their Criminal justice systems. In view of their symposium, the organisers would welcome proposals from academics, policy-makers legal practitioners (lawyers, judges, etc.) and opinion formers.

Digital Religioscapes: Current Methodologies and Novelties in the analysis of sacr(aliz)ed spaces

The study of ancient religions – their materiality and practices – was subject to enormous changes, over the past years. However, the digital humanities have yet to find a meaningful way to integrate the resulting qualitative data into existing digital infrastructures and correlate it with quantitative data. The session therefore aims to bring together experts working with different methods of gathering, modelling/visualising, presenting, and analysing data to discuss the diverse ways in which heterogeneous methods and tools can be usefully combined. Approaches that use mixed data (qualitative and quantitative), are just as welcome as the presentation and discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of various individual tools and applications.

Alternative Cultural Globalization: from East Asia to Europe

Without denying the contribution of the American model, which’s mastery in the field of pop culture has been emulated, the objective of this colloquium is to bring to light the alternative represented by East Asia, by spotlighting both the common features and the specificities of countries located in this geographical area, compared to Western countries. For example, if Hallyu was greatly inspired by the Japanese cultural industry, South Korea was nevertheless able to develop quite quickly its own strategies for the production and circulation of its products.
