Invisible Actors in the Making of International Law (1750–2000)

This interdisciplinary conference invites graduate students and early career researchers to consider the genealogy of international law since 1750. It aims to identify new or unrecognised actors – including individuals, groups, and institutions as well as non-human agents – and their contributions to the practices, interpretations, and applications of international law. How did they establish or challenge norms, customs, and institutions? How were their practices, actions, and ideas shaped into law? The event aims to historicise the making of international law by bringing together junior scholars of history and law and to provide a forum for the exploration of new ideas and alternative perspectives, combining and building upon historical and social scientific approaches.

    Heritage sensitive conservation policies

Sacred Forests and Spiritual Landscapes in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and Southeast Asia’s Terrestrial Ecoregions

The symposium offers a space to discuss a state-of-the-art overview of heritage-sensitive policies related to sacred forests and spiritual landscapes, with a focus on forest conservation practices based on Indigenous ecological ways of knowing and relating to forests. The seminar will explore the concept of indigeneity as a decolonial relational approach to forest dwellers that overcomes the rigid, top-down definition of who are Indigenous People and Local Communities (IPLCs). The seminar highlights recent advancements in interdisciplinary research, decolonial methodologies, political ecology analysis and ethical approaches to the conservation of sacred natural sites and spiritual landscapes.

Re-creating Palestine : Trauma, Memory and Resistance in the Contemporary Artistic Production in/on Palestine

Circulations, Transfers, Reconfigurations. Cultural Dynamics of Creation: Across Time and Space

In a world characterized by constant exchanges of ideas, objects, images, and stories, questions about circulation and transfer are central to human and social sciences. These phenomena are not only modern; they have shaped cultural history from the earliest commercial and intellectual routes of the modern era to the digital networks of the 21st century. This workshop aims to provide an interdisciplinary space for reflection and a diachronic perspective on how forms, concepts, and viewpoints are expressed across space, language, gender, and eras.

Heritage dynamics in the urban peripheries

    Heritage and the Metropolis

Metropolitan cities are well understood to be in the course of constant change. The city’s edges push ever outward into the suburbs or the hinterland. Heritage, on the other hand, certainly in the guide of preservation is often constructed as resistance to change; and yet is not static. The call is aimed at researchers interested in the relationship between heritage and the metropolis, between heritage preservation and urbanisation, in different geographical contexts. We want to compare situations observed in the North and South, in formerly industrialised and non-industrialised regions, in very active metropolises and others in decline.

Archaeology Gone Astray: Forgeries, Misinterpretation, and Other Field Stories

UISPP Commission on the History of Archaeology conference

This conference, titled “Archaeology Gone Astray: Forgeries, Misinterpretations, and Other Field Stories”, is dedicated to the less glorious —but undeniably fascinating— chapters in the history of archaeology. We’ll delve into everything from notorious forgeries and spectacular blunders to interpretive dead ends and moments of… let’s say, excessive enthusiasm in the field. The event offers a space for reflection, self-reflection, and a bit of humor —because, like any living science, archaeology sometimes takes a wrong turn. Yet, even when it goes astray, it always leads to something interesting. While the main theme centers on the field’s twists, turns, and detours, the program will also feature an open session for participants who wish to present their current research projects.

    Translational Epistemologies and Open Science

Towards Equitable and Sustainable Ecosystems of Knowledge Production and Dissemination

Translation has emerged in recent decades as a keyword in disciplines such as cultural history, anthropology and science and technology studies (STS). Moreover, since around the turn of this century it has become an institutionalized concept in medicine – as evident in the increasing ubiquity of knowledge translation and translational research activities that attempt to put research-based knowledge into practice (Ødemark and Engebretsen 2018).This event will provide a forum for engaging with epistemologies and scholarly initiatives that seek to open up spaces for equitable and ethically responsible reflection on translation within various ecosystems of knowledge and society at large.
