    Late Medieval Cardinals Between Crises

From the Western Schism to the V Lateran Council (1378-1517)

The history of the cardinalate, which stretches from the 11th century to the present day, went through one of the most volatile phases of its development between the beginning of the Western Schism (1378) and the close of the Fifth Lateran Council (1517). This congress aims to work and reflect on these cardinals, both as a group, gathered in the Sacred College, and in their individual dimensions, as lords, members of lineages, pastors, reformers, conciliarists, centres of courts, families and networks, diplomats and representatives of nations, patrons of the arts, among others.  The cross-sectional interest of this congress stems from the desire to feed the historiographical renewal that has been taking place over the last two decades on the medieval cardinalate, seeking to bring together researchers who are dedicated to its study, regardless of the angle of approach they may take.

    Haunting(s): Multidisciplinary Approaches

The complexity of haunting lies in its ability to encapsulate the interplay between the seen and unseen, the tangible and intangible, inviting scholars to unravel its intricacies and understand its implications across diverse facets of human experience. This two-day conference aims to bring together a diverse range of global researchers in any discipline whose works draws upon ‘haunting’ in some capacity, to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions and establish a network of scholars working at the forefront of research in this area. We invite expressions of interest from anyone whose research engages with any aspect of haunting and is working in literature, philosophy, history, cultural and media studies, music, modern languages, sociology, and others.

The Echo of Ancestors: The Reemergence and Claims of 'Ancient' Religions in Europe

This interdisciplinary workshop explores the revival of ancient religions in Europe, examining their resurgence, dissemination, institutional recognition, and sociopolitical impact. As non-monotheistic beliefs—polytheism, paganism, and animism—gain renewed interest and are increasingly leveraged in identity debates, this initiative brings together researchers from across Europe for a cross-disciplinary investigation of these evolving dynamics.

CFP: Reactivating Archives in Contemporary Art

For this international conference, researchers and cultural practitioners are invited to explore the articulation of archives in contemporary art. We are interested in exploring how archival materials and frameworks have been mobilised in artistic projects to facilitate and amplify processes of transmission, re-organisation and interrogation. We also welcome papers that foster debates around the role of archival-based art in building the present and the future.

The Speech Bubble, Between Text and Image

This one-day symposium aims at showing the full complexity of the speech bubble, an object that has been largely neglected by research until now, and that cannot be defined solely as ‘the curve surrounding the words spoken by comic strip characters’ (Trésor de la langue française). Based on the observation that the speech bubble often also contains images and even blank spaces, and that its forms and functions vary according to the objects, periods and geographical areas in which it is present, the papers presented during this symposium propose to analyse the complex relation between speech bubble, text and image in a number of visual sources objects drawn from Japanese corpora or indirectly linked to Japan.

    Manga in Every Sense

Reconstructing the complexity of human-environmental interactions in the past

Resilience and antifragility in history and archaeology

This conference aims to bring together researchers interested in advancing the discussion on resilience and antifragility in historical and archaeological reconstructions. Furthermore, the conference seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate by reflecting on the impact of alternative theoretical approaches in prompting new narratives of the past. By challenging established frameworks and exploring diverse perspectives, we aim to foster innovative historical reconstructions that capture the complexity and dynamism of socio-environmental systems in the past.

Maps in American Literature, 15th–21st Century

This symposium seeks to uncover these often overlooked influences, examining how specific maps have shaped both the form and content of American literature. By “maps,” we refer here to cartographic documents of real-world spaces, focusing specifically on those that exist outside or alongside the texts themselves —whether preexisting maps that writers engaged with or maps produced for or after publication. This excludes maps of fictional spaces such as Sherwood Anderson’s map of Winesburg, Ohio, or Faulkner’s map of Yoknapatawpha County.

Seuils in(ter)disciplinaires : une exploration méthodologique de l’indisciplinarité

Roles and Functions of social enterprises in social policy

Our panel aims to address the following question: How do social enterprises interact with, influence and complement social policies, in a global context of economic and societal transformations? The aim of the panel is twofold. On the one hand, to identify the latest concrete realities and scientific productions on the links between social enterprises and social policies, in the particular context that the  world has been experiencing since the last ten years. On the other hand, over and above the inventory that can be made of these realities in different contexts, the aim is to identify future research needs and opportunities on the roles and place occupied by social enterprises in the production of well-being.
