Popular Militias and the Defence of Order in Post-Revolutionary Monarchies

This project aims to stimulate reflection on post-revolutionary monarchical regimes by examining the way in which they authorised or encouraged popular participation in the defence of order through irregular militias. The choice of this object of enquiry lies at the crossroads of two themes that have been fertile grounds for research in recent years, the history of contemporary monarchies and that of popular participation in the maintenance of order. The aim of this call is to produce a monographic dossier to be submitted to a contemporary history journal, the contributions of which will be presented and discussed during a study day (November 9-10, 2023).

Media and sexist and sexual violence

    Inform, denounce, raise awareness

This symposium aims to question the role of the media in the production of information about gender-based and sexual violence. Over the past twenty years, many disciplines have taken up the issue of gender-based violence, but it has not been much understood by researchers through the prism of its media coverage. This international symposium brings together some fifty speakers from different disciplinary and geographical backgrounds to discuss five themes: 1) the conditions of production of media content, 2) media representations of gender-based and sexual violence, 3) media circulation of testimonies, 4) prevention and awareness-raising mechanisms and discourse, 5) emotions and commitment in research work.

Gender and Justice : cross approaches

    Refocusing on Roman provincial society

Forms of coexistence and distinction in Rome's western provinces

Alpha Blondy, from yesterday to tomorrow

A reggae committed to the rebirth of Africa

The undisputed icon of world reggae since the death of Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy offers in the musical universe, a reggae both committed and tinged with proverbs, these tablets of wisdom that facilitate digestion. Author of twenty albums and more than 220 songs, the artist has addressed, in 40 years of career, many themes ranging from politics to religion, social problems and ideological issues. This symposium aims to bring together intellectual skills from around the world, in a multidimensional approach to lead the reflection on the career of Alpha Blondy and beyond, on the evolution of reggae music in the world. His goal is to draw up a critical assessment of the artist’s career while daring to project the future of reggae on the African continent.

Legitimate consumption in medieval cities (12th-16th centuries)

Anticipating Naval Losses: Innovations & Prospects

“If you want to wage war at sea, expect casualties”, one would be tempted to write. To build a unit such and train the crew responsible for arming it involves anticipating the question of losses at sea. What are the human, material, intellectual and cultural resources available to anticipate better? Who are the actors in charge and what is their experience of the losses experienced and/or represented? What data is used to anticipate losses? How is the “retex” (feedback) taken into account in anticipating combat and losses?

Communication, culture and new emerging behaviors in times of crisis

An exploration from the perspective of human and social sciences and their game changer

The pandemic has imposed new rites, a new way of life mainly: at work, at school, in leisure and travel, and even in our most intimate social interactions with our friends, families, and loved ones. The principle of “social distancing” has insinuated itself everywhere (Frédéric Tangy &Jean-Nicolas Tournier2021). This colloquium aims at examining this new transdisciplinary theme. In this regard, under the supervision of the Laboratory of Sciences Applied to the Environment and Sustainable Development (SAEDD), our Action and Research Group in Communication, Culture and Organization (GARCCO/ARGCCO) will launch the second edition of its international colloquium.

    Visions, Voices, Signs, Signification

The organisers of the HHH-2023 conference invite paper proposals from their colleagues in the Human Sciences who can elucidate for their peers the hermeneutical and semiotic principles which were operative in the ideas that peoples in earlier times and in non-Western cultures entertained about the languages they spoke. We are particularly interested in proposals which investigate the belief that, in one guise or another, language is “a gift from the Gods to men”.

    Europe’s devices, European devices?

    Observatoire des discours de/sur l’Europe

After five successful international conferences (Besançon 2013, Brussels 2015, Turin 2017, Bucharest 2019 and Cyprus 2021), the Observatory of Discourses of/about Europe launches its sixth call for papers. This year, the conference aims to explore the discursive construction of Europe through the devices that make it exist, whether they tend to promote it or, on the contrary, seek to distance themselves from it or even to question it. The main aim is to continue to forge an international and interdisciplinary space for discussion on the ways in which the link between discourses on/in Europe and the approach(es) in terms of device(s) can be theoretically addressed and empirically analysed.

    Studying Demands for State

From Practical Tensions to Generalised Crises

This study day intends to interrogate the notion of “demand for state” in different fields and from different social sciences disciplines such as sociology, history and political sciences. By “demand for State” we mean the process by which social groups come to invoke a certain ideal of the state through criticism, demands and reflexive practices. We will pay attention to the different levels at which these demands for state manifest themselves: in the practical tensions and daily affairs of social groups, in the formulation of a critique of the State in intergroup conflict, in the formation of public controversies leading to state reforms, and finally in political crises related to struggles for the state.

The Visionary Drawing and its Knowledge: Orients

As the “Orient” became a central object of Western knowledge and representation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the workshop will examine the way in which visionary drawing took hold of it. It aspires to open up the approach to the visionary drawing in order to comprehend its participation in epistemological and philosophical changes of modern times. It seeks to renew the methods of art history by opening up to the intersecting history of artistic, scientific and political knowledge, which will encourage - beyond the definition of a visual culture - a reflection on their convergences and divergences in terms of images and graphic processes. It will thus focus on the way in which the visionary drawing of the 19th and 20th centuries participates in, or differs from, forms of visual orientalism already well studied in art history.
