Call for papers - Middle Ages

    A European Middle Ages

Circulation of objects, practices, and techniques between Central and Western Europe (1000-1600)

This doctoral workshop aims to explore approaches that interrogate the flow of objects, practices, and techniques within the broadly understood realm of material culture, in contexts of production or consumption. The title of this workshop focuses on geographical Europe, but the emphasis on the European Middle Ages is first and foremost a way of accounting for a material unity on a European scale, beyond political entities. Firstly, it turns out that, when everyday objects used by a large number of people become mass-consumed products, forms of standardization on a large spatial scale must be questionned, as well as its consequences, i.e. a number of similarities.

    The World in Celebration

    Economies of Renewal and Transformation

The "celebration" or post-crisis period is not merely a moment of festivity but an opportunity for tension release, reinvention, collective creativity, and the creation of new identities and relationships. This symposium proposes to examine how, from an economic and organizational perspective, societies reshape, rebuild, and find new avenues for transformation after times of crisis, both systemically and discursively.

Spatialité et diachronie de la gestion de l’eau en Méditerranée

Around a dozen French and European colleagues from Scotland, Spain, Italy and Sweden will be taking part, covering a wide range of subjects and fields. There will also be a poster session, mainly by young researchers working on current projects or PhD.

Knowledge from the margins, marginal knowledge?

Sources, scope, and legitimacy of critical economic knowledge

The study of economic knowledge and its political influence has largely focused on central sites of power and on its academic production. This conference seeks to broaden that perspective by examining marginalized economic knowledge and the dynamics of its (de-)marginalization. It will specifically address the development of lay or relegated economic theories and practices, considering their logic of legitimation, the actors, spaces, and actions that generate them, and their relative autonomy. The conference will concentrate on the long twentieth century and welcomes proposals from all disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.

L’industrie agroalimentaire, levier de la sécurité alimentaire et de la diversification économique

The agri-food industry, a lever for food security and economic diversification

Territory(ies) and Gender(s) in the Americas

This international colloquium explores the links between gender(s) and territory(ies) in the geographical space of the Americas — or Abya Yala — from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. The plurality of the Americas, whether linguistic, political, or cultural, requires intersecting perspectives and approaches. This colloquium offers a multi- and interdisciplinary dialogue drawing from anthropology, sociology, literature, history, geography, political science, archaeology, and arts. It analyzes the dynamics of gender and territory from decolonial and intersectional perspectives.

Unwriting with Photography : Collaborative and Visual Anthropology

The Project “African Continental Free Trade Area” of CUCA (AfCFTA-CUCA)

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents a decisive project and a fundamental dynamic in the economic and commercial life of Africa. It is at once a vision, an ambition, a program, an articulation, a regulation, an action plan, and a networking of the economic assets and commercial opportunities of the continent's states. As we know, in its conception and preliminary orientations, AfCFTA is part of the strategy for materializing and implementing Agenda 2063 drawn up by the African Union.

Kingship in Sparta from Menelaus to Nabis

    Foundations, practices and representations

Spartan dual kingship is one of the most astonishing aspects of Sparta's constitution: despite the vicissitudes of history, it was perpetuated with a certain constancy in a particular political system from its mythical origins to its evolution into a monarchy and disappearance in the Hellenistic period. This preservation has been achieved at the cost of constantly reinventing the representation of kings and their institutional function.

The Global Musical Instrument Market: Making, Trading and Collecting in the 19th Century and the Early 20th Century

Ivory and tropical woods sawn in European factories, pianos exported as far as Oceania, collections brought back from the colonies: the market for musical instruments went global in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rise of trade routes and steam navigation supported the globalization of markets for the raw materials used by instrument makers, whose instruments were exported to every continent, while “exotic” objects enriched museums across Europe, serving the colonial project and the manufacture of musical elsewhere. Historians, musicologists and curators explore the journey of instruments around the world through three themes: collections and empires, trade and manufacture, exchanges and appropriation of sounds.

    The nearness of architecture

To build for the local community

Currently perceived in a largely positive way, 'nearness' has become a trendy concept, which is also valued in architecture and urban planning : use of bio-based and geo-based materials, return to hand drawing, setting-up of agencies in rural areas, renewed interest in critical regionalism, etc. Far from being new, and also going with a dark side, this notion applied to architecture and urban planning deserve exploration over the long term (18th-21st centuries) in order to enrich and qualify current reflections and practices. The conference aim to bring into dialogue the work of researchers and testimonies from local actors in architecture and territorial planning.

Characterising the field of ‘postcolonial’ studies

This workshop is part of a multidisciplinary international project which aims to create a digital resource portal to assemble the data (documents, publications, works) that make up this field. However, the first difficulty encountered concerns the characterization of the domain of knowledge of these studies, its extent, its limits and the definition of the structuring concepts that constitute it. Compared with other fields of study, the field of postcolonial studies is characterised by a greater diversity and fluidity, as well as resistance to the more traditional national interpretative models. This is because it lies at the crossroads of history, comparative literature and literary theory, as well as sociology.
