Calibration / Étalonnage : des mots aux mondes

Anthropologie linguistique, concepts du terrain, concepts du champ

Linguistic anthropology originated via a focus on language use. Now language has two key features: It is only ever encountered in use, that is, processually. And it is forever the medium of its own explication, that is, it is reflexive. To grapple with language, one accordingly needs concepts that possess these features. As is well known, linguistic anthropology arrived at such concepts through its grounding in Peircean semiotics. Another basis for the sub-discipline’s concepts has been the Boasian comparativist tradition of language study. Continuing its exploration of the latter, this conference proposes a focus on the concept of calibration, first taken up by Benjamin Lee Whorf.

Attractiveness and mobility networks: seducing, welcoming and integrating

As part of the study day "Attractiveness and Mobility Networks," PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars are invited to explore the dynamics of attractiveness in individual and collective mobilities, from the Bronze Age to the modern era. The event focuses on the legal, political, and social mechanisms implemented to attract, welcome, and integrate individuals into networks. It also examines the formal and informal circulation of information, as well as the processes of community clustering. Particular attention will be given to both the successes and failures of these mechanisms of attractiveness.

French archaeology archives abroad : what collaborations?

"Interdisciplinarity is part of the very definition of archaeology. To interpret their data, archaeologists need others. They are not alone, but they know this and embrace it." While interdisciplinary collaboration is indeed necessary and commonplace for the interpretation of archaeological data, the same is not true for their management and preservation according to archival principles. However, collaboration with archivists is essential during and after research programs to ensure the proper preservation of data throughout their life cycle and to build future archival heritage.

Praise for the historian’s craft: What's new?

Or historical experience and its epistemological sublimation

Taking the example of Marc Bloch as its starting point, this workshop is not intended as a tribute to the man he was, nor as an exegesis of his work. Rather, it invites us to engage in a kind of role-playing, in which we take up Marc Bloch's question: are we in a position to propose new appraisals for the historian’s craft? This workshop is organized around two major themes: the epistemology of history today, and the experience lived by the professional researcher in troubled times.

    Situated-design : issues and perspectives

Situated-design can be defined as a new approach to design that is part of a contextual dynamic in which creation and design take full account of: materials, know-how, social practices, and the uses of territory, landscapes and environments, as active elements in the design process. In opposition to the dominant productivist model of industrial design, situated design is particularly distinguished by its commitment to preserving and enriching environments.

Tele-Phonies: Listening at a Distance in the Arts and Auditory Cultures

Building on the hypothesis of an interconnection between auditory cultures, perception regimes, and listening techniques, the Tele-Phonies study day proposes an analysis of the regimes of perception and cultures of listening linked to the multifaceted notion of distance. By taking into account not only telephone communication networks and mass radio media but, more broadly, acknowledging listening as a set of practices and media techniques of listening at a distance within or on the margins of these networks, we will try to understand their profound impact on sound arts and auditory cultures.
