Ageism: the construction and deconstruction of representations related to age in literature, the arts and medias

Le douzième numéro de la Revue Traits d’Union se propose d’étudier la notion d’âgisme et ses représentations dans la littérature, les arts et les médias. Ce concept permet essentiellement d'identifier et de dénoncer les stéréotypes et les discriminations qui affectent la vieillesse, classe d'âge qui tend à être invisibilisée et stigmatisée dans les représentations et les pratiques. Il est possible cependant de l'étendre à l'ensemble des discriminations fondées sur l'âge, notamment celles qui touchent la jeunesse. Il s’agira ainsi de voir comment la littérature, les arts et les médias participent au renforcement, à la dénonciation ou à la déconstruction des stéréotypes âgistes.

Eroticism, Poetic Concretism, and Visuality (1960-1970)

The erotic imaginary and the relation between body, gender and text nourished the daring experiences of neo-avant-garde visual poetics in the 1960s and 1970s by establishing themselves at the core of “verbi-voco-visual explorations” (McLuhan, 1967). Without losing sight of the vast cultural heritage and references of historical avant-gardes as well as of Beat Poetry, Fluxus and Situationist visual-erotic production, the symposium aims at reconstructing and assessing the impact of erotic desire on Concrete and Visual Poetry through a rich corpus of literary works, magazines, and ephemera starting with the Bibliothèque Kandinsky – Centre Pompidou collections and expanding the reflection to other relevant examples of post-war experimental poetry. In addition to keynote lectures and academic presentations, the conference will host poetry readings and performances in order to prompt an interdisciplinary and international debate on the issues, and to examine a unique body of works that illuminate the far-reaching conceptual and poetic implications of neo-avant-garde verbo-visual eroticism.

Climate Migrations: Past, Present, Future

Though interest in environmental migration has grown steadily since the 1980s, the climate emergency has established climate migration as a major subject of research. This type of migration can be defined as movements by individuals or groups which are mainly caused by factors related to a sudden or progressive environmental alteration due to climate change. Both climate science on the one hand, and humanities and social sciences on the other, are now deepening our collective understanding of climate migration. And yet transdisciplinary “consilience” between those two domains of knowledge remains rare and, indeed, presents major methodological challenges

Modernities and the relational construction of national identities in East Asia (1856-1945)

Le projet de la journée d’étude est d’éclairer cet aspect de diversité des processus de construction des modernités dans la région asiatique. La matinée se concentre plus sur des processus intra-nationaux dans le domaine littéraire et culturel, tandis que l’après-midi abordera une question plus spécifique, celle du pan-asiatisme (ou « panasianisme », ou encore « asianisme »). Cette idéologie politico-culturelle s’est particulièrement développée au Japon, mais a également trouvé une réponse dans d’autres pays ayant développé leur propre discours analogue, parfois dans le cadre de réseaux humains et intellectuels.

Ce colloque, qui prend pour point de départ la diffusion du choléra en Haïti, a pour objectif de conduire une approche interdisciplinaire et une réflexion méthodologique, conceptuelle dans différents domaines de recherche touchant aux sciences humaines et sociales, privilégiant les réflexions sur la santé mondiale et les organisations globales, l’évaluation des institutions internationales interventionnistes dans les périphéries vulnérables, la crise sanitaire et la diplomatie mondiale, la place de la science au service de l’intérêt général, la résilience des victimes d’épidémie (sida, choléra, covid-19…) et la gestion lacunaire des organisations internationales.

The photography of persecution. Pictures of the holocaust

The conference organizers invite contributions that highlight what is missing from scholarly and public discourse about the photography of the Holocaust. We welcome papers that shed new light on persecution and mass murder through an examination of photographic images. In particular, we seek papers that explore the historical context in which photographs were produced, that restore our critical distance to the narratives presented by the photographs, and that take up methodological problems associated with the use of photographic images as instruments of dictatorial rule or the resistance to it. The conference will focus on the photographic record of the persecution of Jews in Nazi-dominated Europe and its colonial possessions from 1933 to 1945. We welcome contributions that focus on individual or serial photographic images, whether they are iconic or have yet to be widely distributed, whether they were taken by Jews, Nazis, local collaborators, public authorities, photojournalists, or amateur photographers.
