Travel and Sojourn in the Early Nineteenth Century

Beyond Naples, toward Amalfi and Sorrento

During the first half of the nineteenth century traveling and sojourning in Europe reflected a cultural climate marked by both resistance and enthusiasm. The conference is intended as well to cast light on the evolving changes in travel and sojourn in Naples and localities along the gulf during the first half of the nineteenth century, not failing to draw comparisons with other areas of Mediterranean Europe.

    Cold Warriors

The Cultural Avant-Garde of the Bipolar Struggle

For most of the second part of the twentieth century, geopolitical issues remained at the center of the historiographical debate on the Cold War. Culture and ideology, however, have gained more and more attention in recent historiography. New emphasis has been placed on the role of ideas and language, as well as on the agency of specific individual and collective actors. In this perspective, the concept of the Cold Warrior appears crucial.

Festivals in Hainaut at the time of Jacques du Broeucq

The aim of the conference is to bring to widespread public notice a famed series of occasions when, as the hub of Renaissance Europe, the Low Countries commanded the continent’s attention, with Hainaut and its capital Mons featuring as the site of the most famous and influential events. These took place in 1549 when Charles V, Count of Hainaut and Holy Roman Emperor, attempted to determine the continent’s dynastic, political and economic future by nominating as his successor his son Philip of Spain. With this aim in mind, Charles’s sister Mary of Hungary commissioned a series of magnificent festivals, the most lavish of which took place in September of that year at her palaces close to Mons at Binche and Mariemont.

    Beyond brain drain

Skills and Mobility without Methodological Nationalism

In the late 20th century, the metaphor of “brain drain” dominated the understanding of skilled labor mobility at a global level. Indebted to methodological nationalism, the metaphor of “brain drain” framed the analysis as if nation-states were the primary, sometime the single, unit of concern: the focus was on how countries are affected by highly-skilled migration, what policies they should adopt, and what obligations do individuals owe to the countries.

Tourism and Gentrification in the Metropolis

A wide literature analyzes the changes that affect contemporary metropolises trough the concept of gentrification, i.e. Urban regeneration policies, the New Build gentrification, the Return to the city movement, the Displacement patterns analysis. Although bibliography analyzes the extent of gentrification in tourist cities little attention has been paid to tourism and tourist traffic as main factors of gentrification in metropolitan areas, or to tourism as the central strategic focus of the regeneration policies. Tourism gentrification is difficult to analyze, as it is affected by the changing patterns of tourism flow; it is however a critical shaping force of socio-economic and contemporary urban landscapes.

    Snapshots of Change

Assessing Social Transformations in Qualitative Research

The study of “change” is a central research topic in social science. However, how can we concretely assess social change when we conduct qualitative research which is based on case studies, and has a limited scope of inquiry both in terms of time and space? This international workshop seeks to address this key methodological issue through an interdisciplinary dialogue. On the basis of concrete empirical examples, we would like to focus on the available means that enable us to overcome obstacles encountered when studying change through qualitative research.

    Socially Sustainable Suburbia

This issue aims to attract further attention to the challenging task of social sustainability in suburban areas. Rethinking suburbia entails both an analysis of possible improvement measures oriented towards the existing stock of buildings and the creation of new models of settlements in suburban locations. Such initiatives usually assume that, by means of a high quality urban design and planning, it is possible to assure the existence of both place-making and liveability in a specific context. However, it is the social response of residents that is the most significant proof of the success of a renewal initiative. This thematic issue calls for a critical reflection on both brand-new and pre-existing developments. Is it possible to promote liveability in a suburban environment?
