    The Concept of Mixed Migration

Reflecting on Today’s Migratory Policies, Movements and Paradigms Shifts

This call for papers relates specifically to a series of four working panels which be held during the conference. These working panels will aim to examine selected case studies linked to ‘The Phenomenon of Mixed Migration’ (sessions 2 and 3 of the provisional agenda). These case studies shall relate to one of the following four regions of the world: West and North Africa; the horn of Africa & Middle-East; Central America; South-East Asia. The submissions are expected to highlight the different issues raised by mixed flows of migrants in a given region. Contributors will explore the complexification of migration dynamics and look at the consequences of recent migration and asylum policies on conditions of movements, and highlight both the constraints and coping strategies they entail.

"There is no such thing as nature!" Redefining the Concept & Future of Nature in Contemporary Art

    Congo Basin Hunter-Gatherers

The international conference is being held to share and evaluate recent research on Congo Basin hunter-gatherers. It has been almost ten years since international researchers have convened to discuss research and development issues facing Congo Basin hunter-gatherers. We are especially interested in field-based research reports from any discipline, but encourage participants to consider their data and conclusions within the scope of development, global change and the fate of Congo Basin peoples. Extensive cultural diversity exists and not all Congo Basis huntergatherers actively hunt and gather (e.g., they may have cash crops or live near cities). We are interested in understanding cultural diversity and processes of culture change, but the focus is on peoples and groups with a long history of living in and strong identity with the tropical forest. Papers on Congo Basin farmers and fishermen are encouraged if they include a history of or relationships between hunter-gatherers and farmers or fishermen. Papers that compare Congo Basin hunter-gatherer with farmers/fisherman or Congo Basin hunter-gatherers with hunter-gatherers in other parts of the world are also welcome.

    Dwelling : toward a new concept ?

Social Geography of Risk: Which Approaches?

Special session Annual Association of American Geographers Meeting

In this session we want to focus on the definition of risk, the way this category is constructed, through which relations and which spatialities is forged. Building on real case studies, we are interested in understanding the role of geographers and social scientists when investigating the “societies at risk” and the “vulnerable” groups. Emerging issues in this area of work are related to the need to integrate environmental and social information and the fact that we have to face the implementation of complex investigations including among others: environmental measures, descriptive epidemiology, analytical studies, social surveys and GIS modeling.

Migrant Communities and Urban Space in the Mediterranean ports, 17th-19th centuries

Tenth International Conference on urban History, Ghent 1st-4th September 2010

Recent research on migrant communities has witnessed a clear shift towards a more sophisticated understanding of the variety of bonds that link minority groups to the society they live in, as well as to their places of origins. Yet, when it comes to the understanding of past migrations, historical discourse still depends in many ways on traditional categories of analysis, that often poorly reflect the profound originality of the situations under study. This session is an attempt to challenge traditional and “ready-to-go” views on the organization of community life among migrants who lived in the Mediterranean port-cities during the late modern period (17th to 19th centuries).
