Around the world in a TextGrid day

Edit, manage, publish and explore your TEI data with TextGrid and DARIAH-DE

The workshop will explore two infrastructures, TextGrid and DARIAH-DE, at work, focusing on modeling a “prototype” digital edition starting with a plain text, finishing with a TEI-based online publication. Workshop participants will explore the diversity of the digital research environment TextGrid as well as tools and services of the research infrastructure DARIAH-DE and its possibilities for digital analysis. An introduction on both infrastructures, illustrated by examples from various user scenarios, will be followed by a hands-on session focusing on editing and modelling TEI data, particularly of digital editions, to their publication and exploration. Following these steps, participants will be able to explore the different tools and services to generate, model and publish XML/TEI data guided by TextGrid and DARIAH staff members in small groups according to their own interests and needs. The aim is to create a small digital edition starting with a facsimile and a transcription, enriching data with extended mark-up such as geospatial encoding, and publishing into both the TextGrid Repository and a SADE instance (web portal). The workshop is organized by the German DARIAH member DARIAH-DE.

Interactions between societies and information technology

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are changing the ways people communicate, socialize and collaborate. Understanding the nature and consequences of these new interactions and social transformations is crucial if we want to design and shape a better future where digital technologies become an integral component of our life. The symposium will explore these interactions between society and ICT with a focus on the Humanities. It is organized by Digital Humanities Initiative at Linnaeus University with support from Linnaeus University, DARIAH-EU and Information Engineering Centre.

Digitization of Heritage Librarian Funds: Our Necessity and Obligation

Digitalizacija baštinskih knjižničarskih fondova: naša nužnost i obveza

A collaboration with the Institute for the Culture of Vojvodina Croats and the Saint Michael’s Franciscan Monastery in Subotica during the months of July and August of 2015 has resulted in a practicum for the senior students of the University Interdisciplinary Graduate Study Program in Librarianship. The students have opened a gateway to one of the richest heritage librarian funds, and the four weeks of their life with the books and socialization in a multicultural and multiethnic city, which is twinned with their hometown of Osijek, have produced valuable experiences, as well as a successfully initiated and professional processing of library materials. Established are the possibilities for an acquaintance with the valuable (monumental) library collections and the acquisition of a hands-on librarian habituation subsequent to a theoretical universitarian instruction, whereby a pathway has been paved for the next generations to become a part of this unique cultural initiative. By virtue of the prospective assets allocated by this international project, it could be possible to devise a follow-up to this endeavor. Thus, in addition to an academic knowledge, the students would repeatedly have an opportunity to be practically involved in the conservation, processing, and valorization of the heritage librarian funds.

How to write a Data Management Plan

    Joint EUDAT-OpenAIRE webinar

As several research funders are carrying out (Open) Data Pilots, projects and researchers are increasingly required to deliver a Data Management Plan or DMP. The DMP is a useful instrument for researchers to reflect on and communicate about the way they will deal with their data. It prompts them to think about how they will generate, analyse and share data during their research project and afterwards.

Structure and Dynamics of Media Flows

This workshop is the closing event of the ANR Corpus Géomédia project, which has had geographs, media specialists and computer scientists working together since the end of 2012. It reflects the aims of the project, ie. to create a tool to capture RSS feeds concerned with international news for a number of newspapers in the world (French-, English- and Spanish-speaking), before using it to answer some research issues: what is an event? how to explain the sub/over-representation of some spaces or actors? can the flow of information be modelised at global scale?

    Comparative analyses of nineteenth-century sketches

A new wave of scholarship has emerged in recent years, which examines nineteenth-century sketches (sometimes referred to as “panoramic literature”) from a transnational perspective. The present international conference seeks to continue this comparative reflection by placing the spotlight on the comparative analysis of texts and images of specific types and by tracing how these representations vary across sketches from different places, media and editorial contexts.

The Foreign-language Press: New Forms, Contents and Functions

    Fourth International Transfopress Encounter

As specific material and cultural artefacts, foreign-language periodicals call for a multifaceted approach in order to unravel the intricate connections between text and context, forms and meanings, language and message, as well as the complex interactions between editors, printers, authors and readers. With this in mind, of particular interest for us in the Fourth International Conference of the Transfopress network if the global circulation of media culture at a time when print communication was becoming a mass phenomenon in the 19th and 20th century.

    Collective emotions

Since the writings of the first social psychologists and sociologists of the 20th century, collective behavior has continuously been perceived as a fundamental threat to social and political order. When immersed in large groups, individuals are thought to lose any capacity of self-evaluation and to show anti-social behavior. In crowds, the increased sensitivity to others’ emotions – whose power of contagion was long thought to be as intense as that of infectious diseases – is supposed to turn a reunion of perfectly rational humans into a group of violent rioters. Furthermore, the primordial role of mass movements during the era of totalitarianisms has, without any doubt, reinforced the idea that collective emotions are essentially harmful, for both individuals and communities.

Throughout literary history authors have presented their texts as translations of an imaginary original rather than as original texts of their own making. Yet, as a phenomenon that has taken on a wide variety of forms, pseudotranslation has persistently occupied a marginal position in both literary scholarship and translation studies, and still today begs more systematic study. As simulacrums, they provide a unique mode of representing and/or criticizing prevailing literary practices, and it is this metafictional dimension of pseudotranslations that we aim to address in this special issue. Since pseudotranslation is an essentially transcultural phenomenon that presupposes a (imaginary) cultural transfer, the editors wish to include case studies from a wide variety of cultural and historical backgrounds.

The inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception

Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

Total Mobilization: Web and Social Reality

What is the web doing? What is the web? What does the web want?

The web is mobilizing human beings in impressive and unprecedented ways. In order to understand this phenomenon, we should wonder what kind of entity the web is, how it relates to and bears upon human society and culture. The conference aims at doing so by involving scholars who, in their researches, are addressing these issues from different perspectives. e.g. philosophy, cognitive sciences, anthropology, social sciences.
