Transnational itineraries, dialogues and programmes

This one-day conference investigates the role of student movements in individual and collective emancipations, from the struggle for colonial liberation to the challenges posed by contemporary globalisation. This conference seeks to bring these various approaches together, in order to discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making.

New perspectives on the concept of authorship, 1700-1900

The goal of this conference is to reassess, challenge, and enlarge the concept of authorship, by giving the author a post-mortem of sorts. To do this, we want to bring together fresh and critical historiographical perspectives on the concept of authorship, and challenge participants to think in comparative and transnational frameworks. Ideally, we seek to draw together work from a wide variety of sub-disciplines, creating a dialogue which connects often-separated fields such as book history and literary history.

The Ins and Outs of Socialism

Visions and Experiences of Urban Change in the Second World

This conference examines socialist cities at their points of entry or exit from the socialist project. The theme of transition into and out of socialism and the (un-)making of socialist cities serves as entry points into broader discussions about the specificity of urban change in the Second World and its relationship to similar currents in the global North and South. The conference examines the content of the socialist city – its “ins and outs” – from power grids and housing stocks to museums and places of worship at these points of transition.

Au-delà de la Périphérie – l’Afrique dans les Relations Globales : actions, influence(s) et défis

Organisé en partenariat avec l'Université du Cap (Afrique su Sud) et le Département des relations internationales de la London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), ce colloque international vise à explorer comment les acteurs étatiques, sub-étatiques et non-étatiques africains s'adaptent au changement du/dans le système international. Favorisant largement des perspectives africaines, l'objectif est d’interroger, d’analyser et d'évaluer les capacités et les répertoires d’action individuels et collectifs de même que les modes opératoires de ces acteurs à des niveaux et échelles multiples afin d'aller au-delà des idées pré-conçues sur le manque de capacités d'action et de passivité des acteurs africains dans les relations internationales. À travers le concept « d’agence » (agency), ce colloque analysera comment les acteurs africains s'approprient et participent à produire le « global » et à mieux s'insérer dans l’espace mondial. Ce colloque est également motivé par un besoin de partager les recherches en cours sur l’Afrique dans les relations internationales et de favoriser les échanges entre universitaires et institutions africains et non-africains.

Liberation struggles, the “falling of the empire” and the birth [through images] of African nations

The fortieth anniversary of Portuguese decolonisation of Africa has acted as a catalyst in discussing how Portugal “imagined” colonial politics through moving images and how these propagandist portrayals began to be questioned by the Portuguese “Novo Cinema”. This can be seen in works that were censured and prohibited. Portuguese colonial cinematographic representations were later challenged by films made in the context of the liberation movements and by images that emerged out of the national cinematographic projection (Frodon) of the new Portuguese-speaking African countries. This conference intends to go some way in highlighting common aspects in the emergence of cinema in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, which have all been studied individually.

Quels citoyens pour l'empire ?

La citoyenneté française à l'épreuve de la colonisation dans la première moitié du XXe siècle

Les dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française sont à la fois bien et mal connues. Des travaux récents ont rappelé que la césure entre citoyens et sujets s’est construite de façon progressive et par ajustements entre les enjeux de pouvoir à l’échelle locale et impériale, les logiques juridiques et les revendications portées par des acteurs mus par des intérêts différents, sinon contradictoires. La multiplication des recherches d’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle de la colonisation permet désormais d’écrire une histoire plurivoque des dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française en se demandant comment tous ces acteurs formulent la question qui sert de titre au colloque « quels citoyens pour l’empire ? » et quelles réponses ils lui apportent, ou comment ils font en sorte d’empêcher qu’elle soit débattue.

International Conference

Many African countries experience a context in which society is constantly faced against the State or private corporations. In this situation, civil society organizations become key players into continent’s political chessboard. Acting in various fields and often seeking non-traditional forms of organization, they pose new challenges to their analysis and interpretation. To meet these defiances, the Centro de Estudos Internacionais of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-IUL) promote between 12^th and 13^th January 2017, the International Conference Activisms in Africa, which will discuss the new profiles of social activism in Africa and the perspectives of change they bring.

Special issue of Third World Thematics, a new sister journal of Third World Quarterly

What roles do spiritual, witchcraft and magical worldviews play in 21st Century development agendas? Responding to this central query, this special issue seeks to engage interdisciplinary scholarship on the variegated means through which these practices, worldviews and/or ontologies intersect, impact and (re)shape contemporary development concerns, particularly in the co-production of knowledges and practices of development at a range of scales. In this special issue we seek to explore the rapidly changing contexts in which contemporary development knowledges evolve, and in doing so, disrupt conceptions about where valid knowledge resides and how development challenges are framed.

Sustainability of Rural Systems

Balancing Heritage and Innovation

Belgium is a highly populated country with a long history of land exploitation. The landscape is modified through human impact, shaped by diverse agricultural practices, early urbanization and industrialization, the exploitation of quarries and mines and the dense development of canals, railways and motorway networks. Nevertheless, rural areas are important because farming activities, increasingly mechanized and technologically based, contribute to economic activity, especially to Belgian exports. Agriculture plays an important role in maintaining open space and offering many services, which may be called agroservices, to the new residents of the countryside and people seeking recreation. Due to this long history and sophisticated technological responses to different issues, Belgium is a suitable place to reflect on sustainability and how to balance cultural and natural heritage and innovation with special reference to the ecological and social dimensions.

Social (im)mobilities in Africa

Ethnographic approaches

Taking as a point of departure that since the decline – if not the evaporation – of class analysis in the 1980s, less systematic attention has been paid to the dividing lines of African societies, this workshop wants to take the idea of a social space seriously and to explore, with both theoretical imagination and empirical rigour, the divisions of African social spaces in their historical and multi-layered strata, their production and the way they are practically experienced by social actors.
